Abram's wife Sarai had not borne any children for him, but she owned an Egyptian slave named Hagar. 1Now Sarai, Abram's wife had borne him no children, and she had an Egyptian maid whose name was Hagar.
Sarai said to Abram, "Since the LORD has prevented me from bearing children, go to my slave; perhaps through her I can build a family." And Abram agreed to what Sarai said.2So Sarai said to Abram, "Now behold, the LORD has prevented me from bearing children. Please go in to my maid; perhaps I will obtain children through her." And Abram listened to the voice of Sarai.
So Abram's wife Sarai took Hagar, her Egyptian slave, and gave her to her husband Abram as a wife for him. This happened after Abram had lived in the land of Canaan 10 years. 3After Abram had lived ten years in the land of Canaan, Abram's wife Sarai took Hagar the Egyptian, her maid, and gave her to her husband Abram as his wife.
He slept with Hagar, and she became pregnant. When she realized that she was pregnant, she treated her mistress with contempt. 4He went in to Hagar, and she conceived; and when she saw that she had conceived, her mistress was despised in her sight.
Then Sarai said to Abram, "You are responsible for my suffering! I put my slave in your arms, and ever since she saw that she was pregnant, she has treated me with contempt. May the LORD judge between me and you." 5And Sarai said to Abram, "May the wrong done me be upon you. I gave my maid into your arms, but when she saw that she had conceived, I was despised in her sight. May the LORD judge between you and me."
Abram replied to Sarai, "Here, your slave is in your hands; do whatever you want with her." Then Sarai mistreated her so much that she ran away from her. 6But Abram said to Sarai, "Behold, your maid is in your power; do to her what is good in your sight." So Sarai treated her harshly, and she fled from her presence.
The Angel of the LORD found her by a spring of water in the wilderness, the spring on the way to Shur. 7Now the angel of the LORD found her by a spring of water in the wilderness, by the spring on the way to Shur.
He said, "Hagar, slave of Sarai, where have you come from and where are you going?" She replied, "I'm running away from my mistress Sarai." 8He said, "Hagar, Sarai's maid, where have you come from and where are you going?" And she said, "I am fleeing from the presence of my mistress Sarai."
Then the Angel of the LORD said to her, "You must go back to your mistress and submit to her mistreatment."9Then the angel of the LORD said to her, "Return to your mistress, and submit yourself to her authority."
The Angel of the LORD also said to her, "I will greatly multiply your offspring, and they will be too many to count." 10Moreover, the angel of the LORD said to her, "I will greatly multiply your descendants so that they will be too many to count."
Then the Angel of the LORD said to her: You have conceived and will have a son. You will name him Ishmael, for the LORD has heard your cry of affliction. 11The angel of the LORD said to her further, "Behold, you are with child, And you will bear a son; And you shall call his name Ishmael, Because the LORD has given heed to your affliction.
This man will be like a wild donkey. His hand will be against everyone, and everyone's hand will be against him; he will live at odds with all his brothers. 12"He will be a wild donkey of a man, His hand will be against everyone, And everyone's hand will be against him; And he will live to the east of all his brothers."
So she called the LORD who spoke to her: The God Who Sees, for she said, "In this place, have I actually seen the One who sees me?"13Then she called the name of the LORD who spoke to her, "You are a God who sees"; for she said, "Have I even remained alive here after seeing Him?"
That is why she named the spring, "A Well of the Living One Who Sees Me." It is located between Kadesh and Bered. 14Therefore the well was called Beer-lahai-roi; behold, it is between Kadesh and Bered.
So Hagar gave birth to Abram's son, and Abram gave the name Ishmael to the son Hagar had. 15So Hagar bore Abram a son; and Abram called the name of his son, whom Hagar bore, Ishmael.
Abram was 86 years old when Hagar bore Ishmael to him. 16Abram was eighty-six years old when Hagar bore Ishmael to him.
