Paul, an apostle of Christ Jesus by God's will, for the promise of life in Christ Jesus: 1From Paul, an apostle of Christ Jesus by the will of God, to further the promise of life in Christ Jesus,
To Timothy, my dearly loved son. Grace, mercy, and peace from God the Father and Christ Jesus our Lord. 2to Timothy, my dear child. Grace, mercy, and peace from God the Father and Christ Jesus our Lord!
I thank God, whom I serve with a clear conscience as my ancestors did, when I constantly remember you in my prayers night and day.3I am thankful to God, whom I have served with a clear conscience as my ancestors did, when I remember you in my prayers as I do constantly night and day.
Remembering your tears, I long to see you so that I may be filled with joy, 4As I remember your tears, I long to see you, so that I may be filled with joy.
clearly recalling your sincere faith that first lived in your grandmother Lois, then in your mother Eunice, and that I am convinced is in you also. 5I recall your sincere faith that was alive first in your grandmother Lois and in your mother Eunice, and I am sure is in you.
Therefore, I remind you to keep ablaze the gift of God that is in you through the laying on of my hands.6Because of this I remind you to rekindle God's gift that you possess through the laying on of my hands.
For God has not given us a spirit of fearfulness, but one of power, love, and sound judgment. 7For God did not give us a Spirit of fear but of power and love and self-control.
So don't be ashamed of the testimony about our Lord, or of me His prisoner. Instead, share in suffering for the gospel, relying on the power of God. 8So do not be ashamed of the testimony about our Lord or of me, a prisoner for his sake, but by God's power accept your share of suffering for the gospel.
He has saved us and called us with a holy calling, not according to our works, but according to His own purpose and grace, which was given to us in Christ Jesus before time began. 9He is the one who saved us and called us with a holy calling, not based on our works but on his own purpose and grace, granted to us in Christ Jesus before time began,
This has now been made evident through the appearing of our Savior Christ Jesus, who has abolished death and has brought life and immortality to light through the gospel. 10but now made visible through the appearing of our Savior Christ Jesus. He has broken the power of death and brought life and immortality to light through the gospel!
For this gospel I was appointed a herald, apostle, and teacher,11For this gospel I was appointed a preacher and apostle and teacher.
and that is why I suffer these things. But I am not ashamed, because I know the One I have believed in and am persuaded that He is able to guard what has been entrusted to me until that day. 12Because of this, in fact, I suffer as I do. But I am not ashamed, because I know the one in whom my faith is set and I am convinced that he is able to protect what has been entrusted to me until that day.
Hold on to the pattern of sound teaching that you have heard from me, in the faith and love that are in Christ Jesus. 13Hold to the standard of sound words that you heard from me and do so with the faith and love that are in Christ Jesus.
Guard, through the Holy Spirit who lives in us, that good thing entrusted to you.14Protect that good thing entrusted to you, through the Holy Spirit who lives within us.
This you know: All those in Asia have turned away from me, including Phygelus and Hermogenes. 15You know that everyone in the province of Asia deserted me, including Phygelus and Hermogenes.
May the Lord grant mercy to the household of Onesiphorus, because he often refreshed me and was not ashamed of my chains.16May the Lord grant mercy to the family of Onesiphorus, because he often refreshed me and was not ashamed of my imprisonment.
On the contrary, when he was in Rome, he diligently searched for me and found me.17But when he arrived in Rome, he eagerly searched for me and found me.
May the Lord grant that he obtain mercy from Him on that day. And you know very well how much he ministered at Ephesus. 18May the Lord grant him to find mercy from the Lord on that day! And you know very well all the ways he served me in Ephesus.
