Holman Christian Standard BibleNET Bible
Job continued his discourse, saying: 1And Job took up his discourse again:
As God lives, who has deprived me of justice, and the Almighty who has made me bitter, 2"As surely as God lives, who has denied me justice, the Almighty, who has made my life bitter--
as long as my breath is still in me and the breath from God remains in my nostrils, 3for while my spirit is still in me, and the breath from God is in my nostrils,
my lips will not speak unjustly, and my tongue will not utter deceit. 4my lips will not speak wickedness, and my tongue will whisper no deceit.
I will never affirm that you are right. I will maintain my integrity until I die. 5I will never declare that you three are in the right; until I die, I will not set aside my integrity!
I will cling to my righteousness and never let it go. My conscience will not accuse me as long as I live! 6I will maintain my righteousness and never let it go; my conscience will not reproach me for as long as I live.
May my enemy be like the wicked and my opponent like the unjust. 7"May my enemy be like the wicked, my adversary like the unrighteous.
For what hope does the godless man have when he is cut off, when God takes away his life? 8For what hope does the godless have when he is cut off, when God takes away his life?
Will God hear his cry when distress comes on him? 9Does God listen to his cry when distress overtakes him?
Will he delight in the Almighty? Will he call on God at all times? 10Will he find delight in the Almighty? Will he call out to God at all times?
I will teach you about God's power. I will not conceal what the Almighty has planned. 11I will teach you about the power of God; What is on the Almighty's mind I will not conceal.
All of you have seen this for yourselves, why do you keep up this empty talk? 12If you yourselves have all seen this, Why in the world do you continue this meaningless talk?
This is a wicked man's lot from God, the inheritance the ruthless receive from the Almighty. 13This is the portion of the wicked man allotted by God, the inheritance that evildoers receive from the Almighty.
Even if his children increase, they are destined for the sword; his descendants will never have enough food. 14If his children increase--it is for the sword! His offspring never have enough to eat.
Those who survive him will be buried by the plague, yet their widows will not weep for them. 15Those who survive him are buried by the plague, and their widows do not mourn for them.
Though he piles up silver like dust and heaps up a wardrobe like clay-- 16If he piles up silver like dust and stores up clothing like mounds of clay,
he may heap it up, but the righteous will wear it, and the innocent will divide up his silver. 17what he stores up a righteous man will wear, and an innocent man will inherit his silver.
The house he built is like a moth's cocoon or a booth set up by a watchman. 18The house he builds is as fragile as a moth's cocoon, like a hut that a watchman has made.
He lies down wealthy, but will do so no more; when he opens his eyes, it is gone. 19He goes to bed wealthy, but will do so no more. When he opens his eyes, it is all gone.
Terrors overtake him like a flood; a storm wind sweeps him away at night. 20Terrors overwhelm him like a flood; at night a whirlwind carries him off.
An east wind picks him up, and he is gone; it carries him away from his place. 21The east wind carries him away, and he is gone; it sweeps him out of his place.
It blasts at him without mercy, while he flees desperately from its grasp. 22It hurls itself against him without pity as he flees headlong from its power.
It claps its hands at him and scorns him from its place. 23It claps its hands at him in derision and hisses him away from his place.
