The LORD said to Moses: "Speak to Aaron's sons, the priests, and tell them: A priest is not to make himself ceremonially unclean for a dead person among his relatives,1The LORD said to Moses: "Say to the priests, the sons of Aaron--say to them, 'For a dead person no priest is to defile himself among his people,
except for his immediate family: his mother, father, son, daughter, or brother. 2except for his close relative who is near to him: his mother, his father, his son, his daughter, his brother,
He may make himself unclean for his young unmarried sister in his immediate family. 3and his virgin sister who is near to him, who has no husband; he may defile himself for her.
He is not to make himself unclean for those related to him by marriage and so defile himself." 4He must not defile himself as a husband among his people so as to profane himself.
Priests may not make bald spots on their heads, shave the edge of their beards, or make gashes on their bodies.5Priests must not have a bald spot shaved on their head, they must not shave the corner of their beard, and they must not cut slashes in their body.
They are to be holy to their God and not profane the name of their God. For they present the fire offerings to Yahweh, the food of their God, and they must be holy. 6"'They must be holy to their God, and they must not profane the name of their God, because they are the ones who present the LORD's gifts, the food of their God. Therefore they must be holy.
They are not to marry a woman defiled by prostitution. They are not to marry one divorced by her husband, for the priest is holy to his God. 7They must not take a wife defiled by prostitution, nor are they to take a wife divorced from her husband, for the priest is holy to his God.
You are to consider him holy since he presents the food of your God. He will be holy to you because I, Yahweh who sets you apart, am holy. 8You must sanctify him because he presents the food of your God. He must be holy to you because I, the LORD who sanctifies you all, am holy.
If a priest's daughter defiles herself by promiscuity, she defiles her father; she must be burned up." 9If a daughter of a priest profanes herself by engaging in prostitution, she is profaning her father. She must be burned to death.
The priest who is highest among his brothers, who has had the anointing oil poured on his head and has been ordained to wear the garments, must not dishevel his hair or tear his garments.10"'The high priest--who is greater than his brothers, on whose head the anointing oil is poured, who has been ordained to wear the priestly garments--must neither dishevel the hair of his head nor tear his garments.
He must not go near any dead person or make himself unclean even for his father or mother.11He must not go where there is any dead person; he must not defile himself even for his father and his mother.
He must not leave the sanctuary or he will desecrate the sanctuary of his God, for the consecration of the anointing oil of his God is on him; I am Yahweh." 12He must not go out from the sanctuary and must not profane the sanctuary of his God, because the dedication of the anointing oil of his God is on him. I am the LORD.
He is to marry a woman who is a virgin. 13He must take a wife who is a virgin.
He is not to marry a widow, a divorced woman, or one defiled by prostitution. He is to marry a virgin from his own people, 14He must not marry a widow, a divorced woman, or one profaned by prostitution; he may only take a virgin from his people as a wife.
so that he does not corrupt his bloodline among his people, for I am Yahweh who sets him apart." 15He must not profane his children among his people, for I am the LORD who sanctifies him.'"
The LORD spoke to Moses: "16The LORD spoke to Moses:
Tell Aaron: None of your descendants throughout your generations who has a physical defect is to come near to present the food of his God. 17"Tell Aaron, 'No man from your descendants throughout their generations who has a physical flaw is to approach to present the food of his God.
No man who has any defect is to come near: no man who is blind, lame, facially disfigured, or deformed; 18Certainly no man who has a physical flaw is to approach: a blind man, or one who is lame, or one with a slit nose, or a limb too long,
no man who has a broken foot or hand, 19or a man who has had a broken leg or arm,
or who is a hunchback or a dwarf, or who has an eye defect, a festering rash, scabs, or a crushed testicle.20or a hunchback, or a dwarf, or one with a spot in his eye, or a festering eruption, or a feverish rash, or a crushed testicle.
No descendant of Aaron the priest who has a defect is to come near to present the fire offerings to the LORD. He has a defect and is not to come near to present the food of his God. 21No man from the descendants of Aaron the priest who has a physical flaw may step forward to present the LORD's gifts; he has a physical flaw, so he must not step forward to present the food of his God.
He may eat the food of his God from what is especially holy as well as from what is holy. 22He may eat both the most holy and the holy food of his God,
But because he has a defect, he must not go near the curtain or approach the altar. He is not to desecrate My sanctuaries, for I am Yahweh who sets them apart."23but he must not go into the veil-canopy or step forward to the altar because he has a physical flaw. Thus he must not profane my holy places, for I am the LORD who sanctifies them.'"
Moses said this to Aaron and his sons and to all the Israelites. 24So Moses spoke these things to Aaron, his sons, and all the Israelites.
