| 1 LORD, why do You stand so far away? Why do You hide in times of trouble? | 1O LORD, why do you stand so far away? Why do you hide when I am in trouble? |
| 2In arrogance the wicked relentlessly pursue the afflicted; let them be caught in the schemes they have devised. | 2The wicked arrogantly hunt down the poor. Let them be caught in the evil they plan for others. |
| 3For the wicked one boasts about his own cravings; the one who is greedy curses and despises the LORD. | 3For they brag about their evil desires; they praise the greedy and curse the LORD. |
| 4In all his scheming, the wicked arrogantly thinks:" There is no accountability, since God does not exist." | 4The wicked are too proud to seek God. They seem to think that God is dead. |
| 5His ways are always secure; Your lofty judgments are beyond his sight; he scoffs at all his adversaries. | 5Yet they succeed in everything they do. They do not see your punishment awaiting them. They sneer at all their enemies. |
| 6He says to himself, "I will never be moved-- from generation to generation without calamity." | 6They think, “Nothing bad will ever happen to us! We will be free of trouble forever!” |
| 7Cursing, deceit, and violence fill his mouth; trouble and malice are under his tongue. | 7Their mouths are full of cursing, lies, and threats. Trouble and evil are on the tips of their tongues. |
| 8He waits in ambush near the villages; he kills the innocent in secret places. His eyes are on the lookout for the helpless; | 8They lurk in ambush in the villages, waiting to murder innocent people. They are always searching for helpless victims. |
| 9he lurks in secret like a lion in a thicket. He lurks in order to seize the afflicted; he seizes the afflicted and drags him in his net. | 9Like lions crouched in hiding, they wait to pounce on the helpless. Like hunters they capture the helpless and drag them away in nets. |
| 10So he is oppressed and beaten down; the helpless fall because of his strength. | 10Their helpless victims are crushed; they fall beneath the strength of the wicked. |
| 11He says to himself, "God has forgotten; He hides His face and will never see." | 11The wicked think, “God isn’t watching us! He has closed his eyes and won’t even see what we do!” |
| 12Rise up, LORD God! Lift up Your hand. Do not forget the afflicted. | 12Arise, O LORD! Punish the wicked, O God! Do not ignore the helpless! |
| 13Why has the wicked person despised God? He says to himself, "You will not demand an account." | 13Why do the wicked get away with despising God? They think, “God will never call us to account.” |
| 14But You Yourself have seen trouble and grief, observing it in order to take the matter into Your hands. The helpless entrusts himself to You; You are a helper of the fatherless. | 14But you see the trouble and grief they cause. You take note of it and punish them. The helpless put their trust in you. You defend the orphans. |
| 15Break the arm of the wicked and evil person; call his wickedness into account until nothing remains of it. | 15Break the arms of these wicked, evil people! Go after them until the last one is destroyed. |
| 16The LORD is King forever and ever; the nations will perish from His land. | 16The LORD is king forever and ever! The godless nations will vanish from the land. |
| 17 LORD, You have heard the desire of the humble; You will strengthen their hearts. You will listen carefully, | 17LORD, you know the hopes of the helpless. Surely you will hear their cries and comfort them. |
| 18doing justice for the fatherless and the oppressed so that men of the earth may terrify them no more. | 18You will bring justice to the orphans and the oppressed, so mere people can no longer terrify them. |
