The proverbs of David's son Solomon, king of Israel.1These are the proverbs of Solomon son of David, king of Israel,
These proverbs are for gaining wisdom and discipline; for understanding words of insight;2for gaining wisdom and discipline, for comprehending words of insight,
for acquiring the discipline that produces wise behavior, righteousness, justice, and upright living; 3and for receiving instruction in wise living and in righteousness, justice, and equity.
for giving prudence to the naïve, and knowledge and discretion to the young.4To impart prudence to the simple and knowledge and discretion to the young,
Let the wise listen and increase their learning; let the person of understanding receive guidance5let the wise listen and gain instruction, and the discerning acquire wise counsel
in understanding proverbs, clever sayings, words of the wise, and their riddles.6by understanding the proverbs and parables, the sayings and riddles of the wise.
The fear of the LORD is the beginning of knowledge, but fools despise wisdom and discipline. 7The fear of the LORD is the beginning of knowledge, but fools despise wisdom and discipline.
My son, listen to your father's instruction, and do not let go of your mother's teaching.8Listen, my son, to your father’s instruction, and do not forsake the teaching of your mother.
They will be a graceful wreath for your head and a chain for your neck.9For they are a garland of grace on your head and a pendant around your neck.
My son, if sinners entice you, do not consent.10My son, if sinners entice you, do not yield to them.
If they say, "Come with us! Let's lie in wait for blood; let's ambush some innocent person for no reason at all.11If they say, “Come along, let us lie in wait for blood, let us ambush the innocent without cause,
Let's swallow them alive like Sheol, and whole like those who go down into the Pit. 12let us swallow them alive like Sheol, and whole like those descending into the Pit.
We'll find all kinds of valuable wealth, and we'll fill our houses with spoil.13We will find all manner of precious goods; we will fill our houses with plunder.
Throw your lot in with us, and all of us will have one purse."14Throw in your lot with us; let us all share one purse”—
My son, do not go along with them, and keep your feet away from their paths!15my son, do not walk the road with them or set foot upon their path.
For they run toward evil; these enticers shed blood without hesitation. 16For their feet run to evil, and they are swift to shed blood.
Look, it is useless to spread a net in full view of all the birds,17How futile it is to spread the net where any bird can see it!
but these people lie in wait for their own blood. They ambush only themselves.18But they lie in wait for their own blood; they ambush their own lives.
Such is the way of all those who seek illicit gain— it takes away the lives of those who possess it.19Such is the fate of all who are greedy, whose unjust gain takes the lives of its possessors.
Wisdom cries out in the street; she raises her voice in the public squares.20Wisdom calls out in the street, she lifts her voice in the square;
She calls out at the busiest part of the noisy streets, and at the entrance to the gates of the city she utters her words:21in the main concourse she cries aloud, at the city gates she makes her speech:
"You naïve ones, how long will you love naivete? And how long will scoffers delight in scoffing or fools hate knowledge?"22“How long, O simple ones, will you love your simple ways? How long will scoffers delight in their scorn and fools hate knowledge?
Return to my correction! Look, I will pour out my spirit on you, and I will make my words known to you.23If you had repented at my rebuke, then surely I would have poured out my spirit on you; I would have made my words known to you.
"Because I called out to you and you refused to respond— I appealed, but no one paid attention—24Because you refused my call, and no one took my outstretched hand,
because you neglected all my advice and did not want my correction,25because you neglected all my counsel, and wanted none of my correction,
I will laugh at your calamity. I will mock when what you fear comes,26in turn I will mock your calamity; I will sneer when terror strikes you,
when what you dread comes like a storm, and your calamity comes on like a whirlwind, when distress and anguish come upon you.27when your dread comes like a storm, and your destruction like a whirlwind, when distress and anguish overwhelm you.
"Then they will call out to me, but I will not answer; they will seek me diligently, but they will not find me.28Then they will call on me, but I will not answer; they will earnestly seek me, but will not find me.
"Because they hated knowledge and did not choose the fear of the LORD;29For they hated knowledge and chose not to fear the LORD.
they did not want my advice, and they rejected all my correction.30They accepted none of my counsel; they despised all my reproof.
They will eat the fruit of their way, and they will be filled with their own devices.31So they will eat the fruit of their own way, and be filled with their own devices.
Indeed, the waywardness of the naïve will kill them, and the complacency of fools will destroy them.32For the waywardness of the simple will slay them, and the complacency of fools will destroy them.
"But the person who listens to me will live safely and will be secure from the fear of evil."33But whoever listens to me will dwell in safety, secure from the fear of evil.”
