"Woe to those who are at ease in Zion, to those who rest on the mountain of Samaria— the famous men of the nations to whom the house of Israel came!1Woe to those who are at ease in Zion and to those who feel secure on the hill of Samaria--the notable people in this first of the nations, those the house of Israel comes to.
Cross over to Calneh and look around, then go on to that great city of Hamath, and from there go down to Gath of the Philistines. Are you better than these kingdoms? Or is their territory more extensive than yours?2Cross over to Calneh and see; go from there to great Hamath; then go down to Gath of the Philistines. Are you better than these kingdoms? Is their territory larger than yours?
"Disbelieving that a day of evil will come, embracing opportunities to commit violence, 3You dismiss any thought of the evil day and bring in a reign of violence.
lying on ivory beds, stretching out on your couches, eating lambs from the flock, and fattened calves from the stall,4They lie on beds inlaid with ivory, sprawled out on their couches, and dine on lambs from the flock and calves from the stall.
chanting to the sound of stringed instruments as if they were David, composing songs to themselves as if they were musicians,5They improvise songs to the sound of the harp and invent their own musical instruments like David.
drinking wine from bowls, anointing themselves with the choicest of oils, but not grieving on the occasion of Joseph's ruin—6They drink wine by the bowlful and anoint themselves with the finest oils but do not grieve over the ruin of Joseph.
therefore you will be the first to go into exile, and the celebrations of those who are lounging will end."7Therefore, they will now go into exile as the first of the captives, and the feasting of those who sprawl out will come to an end.
"The Lord GOD has sworn by himself," declares the LORD, the God of the Heavenly Armies, "I utterly detest the arrogance of Jacob; I hate his fortresses; and I will deliver up the city, along with everyone in it.8The Lord GOD has sworn by himself--this is the declaration of the LORD, the God of Armies: I loathe Jacob's pride and hate his citadels, so I will hand over the city and everything in it.
"And if there are ten men remaining in one house, they will die.9And if there are ten men left in one house, they will die.
One's relative will pick up the corpse to carry them from the house for burning, saying to whomever remains inside the house, 'Is there anyone still with you?' And he will say, 'No.' He will respond, 'Be quiet, because we do not mention the name "LORD".'10A close relative and burner will remove his corpse from the house. He will call to someone in the inner recesses of the house, "Any more with you?" That person will reply, "None." Then he will say, "Silence, because the LORD's name must not be invoked."
For indeed, the LORD is giving the command— and he will smash the large house to rubble and the small house into bits.11For the LORD commands: The large house will be smashed to pieces, and the small house to rubble.
"Horses don't run over bare rock, do they? One doesn't plow rock with oxen, does he? But you have turned justice to gall, and the fruit of righteousness into bitterness. 12Do horses gallop on the cliffs? Does anyone plow there with oxen? Yet you have turned justice into poison and the fruit of righteousness into wormwood--
You rejoice in nothing worth mentioning— that is, you keep on saying, 'We captured Karnaim by our own strength of will and by our own effort, didn't we?'13you who rejoice over Lo-debar and say, "Didn't we capture Karnaim for ourselves by our own strength?"
"So look, house of Israel! I will raise up a nation against you," declares the LORD, the God of the Heavenly Armies, "and they will harass you from the entrance of Hamath to the wadi of the wilderness."14But look, I am raising up a nation against you, house of Israel--this is the declaration of the Lord, the GOD of Armies--and they will oppress you from the entrance of Hamath to the Brook of the Arabah.
