In my first book, Theophilus, I wrote about everything Jesus did and taught from the beginning, 1The former treatise have I made, O Theophilus, of all that Jesus began both to do and teach,
up to the day when he was taken up to heaven after giving orders by the Holy Spirit to the apostles he had chosen. 2Until the day in which he was taken up, after that he through the Holy Ghost had given commandments unto the apostles whom he had chosen:
After he had suffered, he had shown himself alive to them by many convincing proofs, appearing to them during a period of 40 days and telling them about the kingdom of God.3To whom also he shewed himself alive after his passion by many infallible proofs, being seen of them forty days, and speaking of the things pertaining to the kingdom of God:
While he was meeting with them, he ordered them, "Don't leave Jerusalem. Instead, wait for what the Father has promised, about which you heard me speak, 4And, being assembled together with them, commanded them that they should not depart from Jerusalem, but wait for the promise of the Father, which, saith he, ye have heard of me.
because John baptized with water, but you will be baptized with the Holy Spirit a few days from now."5For John truly baptized with water; but ye shall be baptized with the Holy Ghost not many days hence.
Now those who had gathered together began to ask Jesus, "Lord, is this the time when you will restore the kingdom to Israel?" 6When they therefore were come together, they asked of him, saying, Lord, wilt thou at this time restore again the kingdom to Israel?
He answered them, "It isn't for you to know what times or periods the Father has fixed by his own authority. 7And he said unto them, It is not for you to know the times or the seasons, which the Father hath put in his own power.
But you'll receive power when the Holy Spirit comes on you, and you'll be my witnesses in Jerusalem, in all Judea and Samaria, and to the ends of the earth."8But ye shall receive power, after that the Holy Ghost is come upon you: and ye shall be witnesses unto me both in Jerusalem, and in all Judaea, and in Samaria, and unto the uttermost part of the earth.
After saying this, Jesus was taken up while those who had gathered together were watching, and a cloud took him out of their sight. 9And when he had spoken these things, while they beheld, he was taken up; and a cloud received him out of their sight.
While he was going and they were gazing up toward heaven, two men in white robes stood right beside them. 10And while they looked stedfastly toward heaven as he went up, behold, two men stood by them in white apparel;
They asked, "Men of Galilee, why do you stand looking up toward heaven? This same Jesus, who has been taken up from you into heaven, will come back in the same way you saw him go up into heaven."11Which also said, Ye men of Galilee, why stand ye gazing up into heaven? this same Jesus, which is taken up from you into heaven, shall so come in like manner as ye have seen him go into heaven.
Then they returned to Jerusalem from the Mount of Olives, which is near Jerusalem, a Sabbath day's journey away.12Then returned they unto Jerusalem from the mount called Olivet, which is from Jerusalem a sabbath day's journey.
When they came into the city, these men went to the upstairs room where they had been staying: Peter and John, James and Andrew, Philip and Thomas, Bartholomew and Matthew, James the son of Alphaeus and Simon the Zealot, and Judas the son of James. 13And when they were come in, they went up into an upper room, where abode both Peter, and James, and John, and Andrew, Philip, and Thomas, Bartholomew, and Matthew, James the son of Alphaeus, and Simon Zelotes, and Judas the brother of James.
With one mind, all of them kept devoting themselves to prayer, along with the women (including Mary the mother of Jesus) and his brothers.14These all continued with one accord in prayer and supplication, with the women, and Mary the mother of Jesus, and with his brethren.
At that time, Peter got up among the brothers (there were about 120 people present) and said, 15And in those days Peter stood up in the midst of the disciples, and said, (the number of names together were about an hundred and twenty,)
"Brothers, the Scripture had to be fulfilled, which the Holy Spirit spoke long ago through the voice of David about Judas, who was the guide for those who arrested Jesus, 16Men and brethren, this scripture must needs have been fulfilled, which the Holy Ghost by the mouth of David spake before concerning Judas, which was guide to them that took Jesus.
because he was one of our number and was appointed to share in this ministry." 17For he was numbered with us, and had obtained part of this ministry.
(Now this man bought a field with the money he got for his crime. Falling on his face, he burst open in the middle, and all his intestines gushed out. 18Now this man purchased a field with the reward of iniquity; and falling headlong, he burst asunder in the midst, and all his bowels gushed out.
This became known to all the residents of Jerusalem, so that this field is called in their language Hakeldama, that is, "The Field of Blood".) 19And it was known unto all the dwellers at Jerusalem; insomuch as that field is called in their proper tongue, Aceldama, that is to say, The field of blood.
"For in the Book of Psalms it is written, 'Let his estate be desolate, and let no one live on it,' and, 'Let someone else take over his office,'20For it is written in the book of Psalms, Let his habitation be desolate, and let no man dwell therein: and his bishoprick let another take.
who was one of the men associated with us all the time the Lord Jesus came and went among us, 21Wherefore of these men which have companied with us all the time that the Lord Jesus went in and out among us,
beginning when he was baptized by John until the day he was taken up from us. Therefore, someone like this must become a witness with us to his resurrection."22Beginning from the baptism of John, unto that same day that he was taken up from us, must one be ordained to be a witness with us of his resurrection.
So they nominated two men—Joseph called Barsabbas, who also was called Justus, and Matthias. 23And they appointed two, Joseph called Barsabas, who was surnamed Justus, and Matthias.
Then they prayed, "Lord, you know the hearts of all people. Show us which one of these two men you have chosen 24And they prayed, and said, Thou, Lord, which knowest the hearts of all men, shew whether of these two thou hast chosen,
to serve in this office of apostle, from which Judas left to go to his own place."25That he may take part of this ministry and apostleship, from which Judas by transgression fell, that he might go to his own place.
So they drew lots for them, and when the lot fell on Matthias, he was enrolled with the eleven apostles.26And they gave forth their lots; and the lot fell upon Matthias; and he was numbered with the eleven apostles.
