| 1When the day of Pentecost was being celebrated, all of them were together in one place. | 1And when the day of Pentecost was fully come, they were all with one accord in one place. |
| 2Suddenly, a sound like the roar of a mighty windstorm came from heaven and filled the whole house where they were sitting. | 2And suddenly there came a sound from heaven as of a rushing mighty wind, and it filled all the house where they were sitting. |
| 3They saw tongues like flames of fire that separated, and one rested on each of them. | 3And there appeared unto them cloven tongues like as of fire, and it sat upon each of them. |
| 4All of them were filled with the Holy Spirit and began to speak in foreign languages as the Spirit gave them that ability. | 4And they were all filled with the Holy Ghost, and began to speak with other tongues, as the Spirit gave them utterance. |
| 5Now devout Jews from every nation on earth were living in Jerusalem. | 5And there were dwelling at Jerusalem Jews, devout men, out of every nation under heaven. |
| 6When that sound came, a crowd quickly gathered, startled because each one heard the disciples speaking in his own language. | 6Now when this was noised abroad, the multitude came together, and were confounded, because that every man heard them speak in his own language. |
| 7Stunned and amazed, they asked, "All of these people who are speaking are Galileans, aren't they? | 7And they were all amazed and marvelled, saying one to another, Behold, are not all these which speak Galilaeans? |
| 8So how is it that each one of us hears them speaking in his own native language: | 8And how hear we every man in our own tongue, wherein we were born? |
| 9Parthians, Medes, Elamites, residents of Mesopotamia, Judea, Cappadocia, Pontus, Asia, | 9Parthians, and Medes, and Elamites, and the dwellers in Mesopotamia, and in Judaea, and Cappadocia, in Pontus, and Asia, |
| 10Phrygia, Pamphylia, Egypt, the district of Libya near Cyrene, Jewish and proselyte visitors from Rome, | 10Phrygia, and Pamphylia, in Egypt, and in the parts of Libya about Cyrene, and strangers of Rome, Jews and proselytes, |
| 11Cretans, and Arabs, listening to them talk in our own languages about the great deeds of God?" | 11Cretes and Arabians, we do hear them speak in our tongues the wonderful works of God. |
| 12All of them continued to be stunned and puzzled, and they kept asking one another, "What can this mean?" | 12And they were all amazed, and were in doubt, saying one to another, What meaneth this? |
| 13But others kept saying in derision, "They're drunk on sweet wine!" | 13Others mocking said, These men are full of new wine. |
| 14Then Peter stood up among the eleven apostles and raised his voice to address them: "Men of Judea and everyone living in Jerusalem! You must understand something, so pay close attention to my words. | 14But Peter, standing up with the eleven, lifted up his voice, and said unto them, Ye men of Judaea, and all ye that dwell at Jerusalem, be this known unto you, and hearken to my words: |
| 15These men are not drunk as you suppose, for it's only nine o'clock in the morning. | 15For these are not drunken, as ye suppose, seeing it is but the third hour of the day. |
| 16Rather, this is what was spoken through the prophet Joel: | 16But this is that which was spoken by the prophet Joel; |
| 17In the last days, God says, I will pour out my Spirit on everyone. Your sons and your daughters will prophesy, your young men will see visions, and your old men will dream dreams. | 17And it shall come to pass in the last days, saith God, I will pour out of my Spirit upon all flesh: and your sons and your daughters shall prophesy, and your young men shall see visions, and your old men shall dream dreams: |
| 18In those days I will even pour out my Spirit on my slaves, men and women alike, and they will prophesy. | 18And on my servants and on my handmaidens I will pour out in those days of my Spirit; and they shall prophesy: |
| 19I will display wonders in the sky above and signs on the earth below: blood, fire, and clouds of smoke. | 19And I will shew wonders in heaven above, and signs in the earth beneath; blood, and fire, and vapour of smoke: |
| 20The sun will become dark, and the moon turn to blood, before the coming of the great and glorious Day of the Lord. | 20The sun shall be turned into darkness, and the moon into blood, before that great and notable day of the Lord come: |
| 21Then whoever calls on the name of the Lord will be saved.' | 21And it shall come to pass, that whosoever shall call on the name of the Lord shall be saved. |
| 22"Fellow Israelis, listen to these words: Jesus from Nazareth was a man authenticated to you by God through miracles, wonders, and signs that God performed through him among you, as you yourselves know. | 22Ye men of Israel, hear these words; Jesus of Nazareth, a man approved of God among you by miracles and wonders and signs, which God did by him in the midst of you, as ye yourselves also know: |
| 23After he was arrested according to the predetermined plan and foreknowledge of God, you crucified this very man and killed him using the hands of lawless men. | 23Him, being delivered by the determinate counsel and foreknowledge of God, ye have taken, and by wicked hands have crucified and slain: |
| 24But God raised him up and put an end to suffering of death, since it was impossible for him to be held by it, | 24Whom God hath raised up, having loosed the pains of death: because it was not possible that he should be holden of it. |
| 25since David says about him, 'I always keep my eyes on the Lord, for he is at my right hand so that I cannot be shaken. | 25For David speaketh concerning him, I foresaw the Lord always before my face, for he is on my right hand, that I should not be moved: |
| 26That is why my heart is glad and my tongue rejoices, yes, even my body still rests securely in hope. | 26Therefore did my heart rejoice, and my tongue was glad; moreover also my flesh shall rest in hope: |
| 27For you will not abandon my soul to Hades or allow your Holy One to experience decay. | 27Because thou wilt not leave my soul in hell, neither wilt thou suffer thine Holy One to see corruption. |
| 28You have made the ways of life known to me, and you will fill me with gladness in your presence.' | 28Thou hast made known to me the ways of life; thou shalt make me full of joy with thy countenance. |
| 29"Brothers, I can tell you confidently that the patriarch David died and was buried, and that his tomb is among us to this day. | 29Men and brethren, let me freely speak unto you of the patriarch David, that he is both dead and buried, and his sepulchre is with us unto this day. |
| 30Therefore, since he was a prophet and knew that God had promised him with an oath to put one of his descendants on his throne, | 30Therefore being a prophet, and knowing that God had sworn with an oath to him, that of the fruit of his loins, according to the flesh, he would raise up Christ to sit on his throne; |
| 31he looked ahead and spoke about the resurrection of the Messiah: 'He was not abandoned to Hades, and his flesh did not experience decay.' | 31He seeing this before spake of the resurrection of Christ, that his soul was not left in hell, neither his flesh did see corruption. |
| 32"It was this very Jesus whom God raised—and we're all witnesses of that. | 32This Jesus hath God raised up, whereof we all are witnesses. |
| 33He has been exalted to the right hand of God, has received from the Father the promised Holy Spirit, and has caused you to experience what you are seeing and hearing. | 33Therefore being by the right hand of God exalted, and having received of the Father the promise of the Holy Ghost, he hath shed forth this, which ye now see and hear. |
| 34After all, David did not go up to heaven, but he said, 'The Lord told my Lord, "Sit at my right hand, | 34For David is not ascended into the heavens: but he saith himself, The LORD said unto my Lord, Sit thou on my right hand, |
| 35until I make your enemies your footstool."' | 35Until I make thy foes thy footstool. |
| 36"Therefore, let all the people of Israel understand beyond a doubt that God made this Jesus, whom you crucified, both Lord and Messiah!" | 36Therefore let all the house of Israel know assuredly, that God hath made that same Jesus, whom ye have crucified, both Lord and Christ. |
| 37When the crowd that had gathered heard this, they were pierced to the heart. They asked Peter and the other apostles, "Brothers, what should we do?" | 37Now when they heard this, they were pricked in their heart, and said unto Peter and to the rest of the apostles, Men and brethren, what shall we do? |
| 38Peter answered them, "Every one of you must repent and be baptized in the name of Jesus the Messiah for the forgiveness of your sins. Then you will receive the Holy Spirit as a gift. | 38Then Peter said unto them, Repent, and be baptized every one of you in the name of Jesus Christ for the remission of sins, and ye shall receive the gift of the Holy Ghost. |
| 39For this promise belongs to you and your children, as well as to all those who are distant, whom the Lord our God may call to himself." | 39For the promise is unto you, and to your children, and to all that are afar off, even as many as the Lord our God shall call. |
| 40Using many different expressions, Peter continued to testify and to plead: "Be saved," he urged them, "from this corrupt generation!" | 40And with many other words did he testify and exhort, saying, Save yourselves from this untoward generation. |
| 41So those who welcomed his message were baptized. That day about 3,000 people were added to their number. | 41Then they that gladly received his word were baptized: and the same day there were added unto them about three thousand souls. |
| 42The believers continued to devote themselves to what the apostles were teaching, to fellowship, to the breaking of bread, and to times of prayer. | 42And they continued stedfastly in the apostles' doctrine and fellowship, and in breaking of bread, and in prayers. |
| 43A sense of fear came over everyone, and many wonders and signs were being done by the apostles. | 43And fear came upon every soul: and many wonders and signs were done by the apostles. |
| 44All the believers were united and shared everything with one another. | 44And all that believed were together, and had all things common; |
| 45They made it their practice to sell their possessions and goods and to distribute the proceeds to anyone who was in need. | 45And sold their possessions and goods, and parted them to all men, as every man had need. |
| 46United in purpose, they went to the Temple every day, ate at each other's homes, and shared their food with glad and humble hearts. | 46And they, continuing daily with one accord in the temple, and breaking bread from house to house, did eat their meat with gladness and singleness of heart, |
| 47They were praising God and enjoying the good will of all the people. Every day the Lord was adding to their number those who were being saved. | 47Praising God, and having favour with all the people. And the Lord added to the church daily such as should be saved. |
