When the day of Pentecost was being celebrated, all of them were together in one place. 1When the day of Pentecost came, they were all together in one place.
Suddenly, a sound like the roar of a mighty windstorm came from heaven and filled the whole house where they were sitting. 2Suddenly a sound like the blowing of a violent wind came from heaven and filled the whole house where they were sitting.
They saw tongues like flames of fire that separated, and one rested on each of them. 3They saw what seemed to be tongues of fire that separated and came to rest on each of them.
All of them were filled with the Holy Spirit and began to speak in foreign languages as the Spirit gave them that ability.4All of them were filled with the Holy Spirit and began to speak in other tongues as the Spirit enabled them.
Now devout Jews from every nation on earth were living in Jerusalem. 5Now there were staying in Jerusalem God-fearing Jews from every nation under heaven.
When that sound came, a crowd quickly gathered, startled because each one heard the disciples speaking in his own language. 6When they heard this sound, a crowd came together in bewilderment, because each one heard their own language being spoken.
Stunned and amazed, they asked, "All of these people who are speaking are Galileans, aren't they? 7Utterly amazed, they asked: "Aren't all these who are speaking Galileans?
So how is it that each one of us hears them speaking in his own native language:8Then how is it that each of us hears them in our native language?
Parthians, Medes, Elamites, residents of Mesopotamia, Judea, Cappadocia, Pontus, Asia, 9Parthians, Medes and Elamites; residents of Mesopotamia, Judea and Cappadocia, Pontus and Asia,
Phrygia, Pamphylia, Egypt, the district of Libya near Cyrene, Jewish and proselyte visitors from Rome, 10Phrygia and Pamphylia, Egypt and the parts of Libya near Cyrene; visitors from Rome
Cretans, and Arabs, listening to them talk in our own languages about the great deeds of God?"11(both Jews and converts to Judaism); Cretans and Arabs--we hear them declaring the wonders of God in our own tongues!"
All of them continued to be stunned and puzzled, and they kept asking one another, "What can this mean?"12Amazed and perplexed, they asked one another, "What does this mean?"
But others kept saying in derision, "They're drunk on sweet wine!"13Some, however, made fun of them and said, "They have had too much wine."
Then Peter stood up among the eleven apostles and raised his voice to address them: "Men of Judea and everyone living in Jerusalem! You must understand something, so pay close attention to my words. 14Then Peter stood up with the Eleven, raised his voice and addressed the crowd: "Fellow Jews and all of you who live in Jerusalem, let me explain this to you; listen carefully to what I say.
These men are not drunk as you suppose, for it's only nine o'clock in the morning.15These people are not drunk, as you suppose. It's only nine in the morning!
Rather, this is what was spoken through the prophet Joel:16No, this is what was spoken by the prophet Joel:
In the last days, God says, I will pour out my Spirit on everyone. Your sons and your daughters will prophesy, your young men will see visions, and your old men will dream dreams.17"'In the last days, God says, I will pour out my Spirit on all people. Your sons and daughters will prophesy, your young men will see visions, your old men will dream dreams.
In those days I will even pour out my Spirit on my slaves, men and women alike, and they will prophesy.18Even on my servants, both men and women, I will pour out my Spirit in those days, and they will prophesy.
I will display wonders in the sky above and signs on the earth below: blood, fire, and clouds of smoke.19I will show wonders in the heavens above and signs on the earth below, blood and fire and billows of smoke.
The sun will become dark, and the moon turn to blood, before the coming of the great and glorious Day of the Lord. 20The sun will be turned to darkness and the moon to blood before the coming of the great and glorious day of the Lord.
Then whoever calls on the name of the Lord will be saved.' 21And everyone who calls on the name of the Lord will be saved.'
"Fellow Israelis, listen to these words: Jesus from Nazareth was a man authenticated to you by God through miracles, wonders, and signs that God performed through him among you, as you yourselves know. 22"Fellow Israelites, listen to this: Jesus of Nazareth was a man accredited by God to you by miracles, wonders and signs, which God did among you through him, as you yourselves know.
After he was arrested according to the predetermined plan and foreknowledge of God, you crucified this very man and killed him using the hands of lawless men. 23This man was handed over to you by God's deliberate plan and foreknowledge; and you, with the help of wicked men, put him to death by nailing him to the cross.
But God raised him up and put an end to suffering of death, since it was impossible for him to be held by it, 24But God raised him from the dead, freeing him from the agony of death, because it was impossible for death to keep its hold on him.
since David says about him, 'I always keep my eyes on the Lord, for he is at my right hand so that I cannot be shaken.25David said about him: "'I saw the Lord always before me. Because he is at my right hand, I will not be shaken.
That is why my heart is glad and my tongue rejoices, yes, even my body still rests securely in hope.26Therefore my heart is glad and my tongue rejoices; my body also will rest in hope,
For you will not abandon my soul to Hades or allow your Holy One to experience decay.27because you will not abandon me to the realm of the dead, you will not let your holy one see decay.
You have made the ways of life known to me, and you will fill me with gladness in your presence.' 28You have made known to me the paths of life; you will fill me with joy in your presence.'
"Brothers, I can tell you confidently that the patriarch David died and was buried, and that his tomb is among us to this day. 29"Fellow Israelites, I can tell you confidently that the patriarch David died and was buried, and his tomb is here to this day.
Therefore, since he was a prophet and knew that God had promised him with an oath to put one of his descendants on his throne, 30But he was a prophet and knew that God had promised him on oath that he would place one of his descendants on his throne.
he looked ahead and spoke about the resurrection of the Messiah: 'He was not abandoned to Hades, and his flesh did not experience decay.' 31Seeing what was to come, he spoke of the resurrection of the Messiah, that he was not abandoned to the realm of the dead, nor did his body see decay.
"It was this very Jesus whom God raised—and we're all witnesses of that. 32God has raised this Jesus to life, and we are all witnesses of it.
He has been exalted to the right hand of God, has received from the Father the promised Holy Spirit, and has caused you to experience what you are seeing and hearing. 33Exalted to the right hand of God, he has received from the Father the promised Holy Spirit and has poured out what you now see and hear.
After all, David did not go up to heaven, but he said, 'The Lord told my Lord, "Sit at my right hand,34For David did not ascend to heaven, and yet he said, "'The Lord said to my Lord: "Sit at my right hand
until I make your enemies your footstool."' 35until I make your enemies a footstool for your feet."'
"Therefore, let all the people of Israel understand beyond a doubt that God made this Jesus, whom you crucified, both Lord and Messiah!" 36"Therefore let all Israel be assured of this: God has made this Jesus, whom you crucified, both Lord and Messiah."
When the crowd that had gathered heard this, they were pierced to the heart. They asked Peter and the other apostles, "Brothers, what should we do?"37When the people heard this, they were cut to the heart and said to Peter and the other apostles, "Brothers, what shall we do?"
Peter answered them, "Every one of you must repent and be baptized in the name of Jesus the Messiah for the forgiveness of your sins. Then you will receive the Holy Spirit as a gift.38Peter replied, "Repent and be baptized, every one of you, in the name of Jesus Christ for the forgiveness of your sins. And you will receive the gift of the Holy Spirit.
For this promise belongs to you and your children, as well as to all those who are distant, whom the Lord our God may call to himself."39The promise is for you and your children and for all who are far off--for all whom the Lord our God will call."
Using many different expressions, Peter continued to testify and to plead: "Be saved," he urged them, "from this corrupt generation!" 40With many other words he warned them; and he pleaded with them, "Save yourselves from this corrupt generation."
So those who welcomed his message were baptized. That day about 3,000 people were added to their number.41Those who accepted his message were baptized, and about three thousand were added to their number that day.
The believers continued to devote themselves to what the apostles were teaching, to fellowship, to the breaking of bread, and to times of prayer.42They devoted themselves to the apostles' teaching and to fellowship, to the breaking of bread and to prayer.
A sense of fear came over everyone, and many wonders and signs were being done by the apostles. 43Everyone was filled with awe at the many wonders and signs performed by the apostles.
All the believers were united and shared everything with one another.44All the believers were together and had everything in common.
They made it their practice to sell their possessions and goods and to distribute the proceeds to anyone who was in need. 45They sold property and possessions to give to anyone who had need.
United in purpose, they went to the Temple every day, ate at each other's homes, and shared their food with glad and humble hearts. 46Every day they continued to meet together in the temple courts. They broke bread in their homes and ate together with glad and sincere hearts,
They were praising God and enjoying the good will of all the people. Every day the Lord was adding to their number those who were being saved.47praising God and enjoying the favor of all the people. And the Lord added to their number daily those who were being saved.
