International Standard VersionNET Bible
"Sound the ram's horn! Like a vulture the enemy will come against the Temple of the LORD, because Israel violated my covenant, transgressing my Law.1Sound the alarm! An eagle looms over the temple of the LORD! For they have broken their covenant with me, and have rebelled against my law.
They cry out to me, 'God, we of Israel acknowledge you.'2Israel cries out to me, "My God, we acknowledge you!"
"Israel has discarded what is good. The enemy will pursue them. 3But Israel has rejected what is morally good; so an enemy will pursue him.
They set kings in place, but not by me. They established princes, whom I did not recognize. They crafted idols for themselves from their silver and gold; as a result, they will be destroyed.4They enthroned kings without my consent! They appointed princes without my approval! They made idols out of their silver and gold, but they will be destroyed!
Your calf, Samaria, has been thrown away. My anger is burning against them. How long until they become pure again?5O Samaria, he has rejected your calf idol! My anger burns against them! They will not survive much longer without being punished, even though they are Israelites!
Because from Israel it was fashioned by craftsmen, it is not God; therefore Samaria's calf will be broken in pieces.6That idol was made by a workman--it is not God! The calf idol of Samaria will be broken to bits.
"Because they sow the wind, they will reap the wind storm. The plant has no stalk and its bud yields no grain. Even if there's a harvest, foreigners will gobble it up.7They sow the wind, and so they will reap the whirlwind! The stalk does not have any standing grain; it will not produce any flour. Even if it were to yield grain, foreigners would swallow it all up.
Israel has been devoured; now they will live among the nations like a worthless container.8Israel will be swallowed up among the nations; they will be like a worthless piece of pottery.
"Because they went over to Assyria, they are like a wild donkey alone by itself. Ephraim has hired some lovers.9They have gone up to Assyria, like a wild donkey that wanders off. Ephraim has hired prostitutes as lovers.
Even though they sold themselves to the nations, I will gather them. They will mourn for a while for the burden they were to the king and princes. 10Even though they have hired lovers among the nations, I will soon gather them together for judgment. Then they will begin to waste away under the oppression of a mighty king.
"The more altars Ephraim builds for sin, the more altars there will be for sin.11Although Ephraim has built many altars for sin offerings, these have become altars for sinning!
I prescribed great things from my Law for them, but they considered them profane.12I spelled out my law for him in great detail, but they regard it as something totally unknown to them!
They offer me meat from the sacrifices of my offerings, and they eat from it, but the LORD does not accept them. He will now remember their transgression and pay them back for their sins; to Egypt they will return.13They offer up sacrificial gifts to me, and eat the meat, but the LORD does not accept their sacrifices. Soon he will remember their wrongdoing, he will punish their sins, and they will return to Egypt.
"Israel has neglected its maker in building palaces. Judah has multiplied its fortified cities, but I will send fire to their cities, and it will consume their fortresses."14Israel has forgotten his Maker and built royal palaces, and Judah has built many fortified cities. But I will send fire on their cities; it will consume their royal citadels.
