Hosea 8
ISV Parallel NLT [BSB CSB ESV HCS KJV ISV NAS NET NIV NLT HEB]
International Standard VersionNew Living Translation
"Sound the ram's horn! Like a vulture the enemy will come against the Temple of the LORD, because Israel violated my covenant, transgressing my Law.1“Sound the alarm! The enemy descends like an eagle on the people of the LORD, for they have broken my covenant and revolted against my law.
They cry out to me, 'God, we of Israel acknowledge you.'2Now Israel pleads with me, ‘Help us, for you are our God!’
"Israel has discarded what is good. The enemy will pursue them. 3But it is too late. The people of Israel have rejected what is good, and now their enemies will chase after them.
They set kings in place, but not by me. They established princes, whom I did not recognize. They crafted idols for themselves from their silver and gold; as a result, they will be destroyed.4The people have appointed kings without my consent, and princes without my approval. By making idols for themselves from their silver and gold, they have brought about their own destruction.
Your calf, Samaria, has been thrown away. My anger is burning against them. How long until they become pure again?5“O Samaria, I reject this calf— this idol you have made. My fury burns against you. How long will you be incapable of innocence?
Because from Israel it was fashioned by craftsmen, it is not God; therefore Samaria's calf will be broken in pieces.6This calf you worship, O Israel, was crafted by your own hands! It is not God! Therefore, it must be smashed to bits.
"Because they sow the wind, they will reap the wind storm. The plant has no stalk and its bud yields no grain. Even if there's a harvest, foreigners will gobble it up.7“They have planted the wind and will harvest the whirlwind. The stalks of grain wither and produce nothing to eat. And even if there is any grain, foreigners will eat it.
Israel has been devoured; now they will live among the nations like a worthless container.8The people of Israel have been swallowed up; they lie among the nations like an old discarded pot.
"Because they went over to Assyria, they are like a wild donkey alone by itself. Ephraim has hired some lovers.9Like a wild donkey looking for a mate, they have gone up to Assyria. The people of Israel have sold themselves— sold themselves to many lovers.
Even though they sold themselves to the nations, I will gather them. They will mourn for a while for the burden they were to the king and princes. 10But though they have sold themselves to many allies, I will now gather them together for judgment. Then they will writhe under the burden of the great king.
"The more altars Ephraim builds for sin, the more altars there will be for sin.11“Israel has built many altars to take away sin, but these very altars became places for sinning!
I prescribed great things from my Law for them, but they considered them profane.12Even though I gave them all my laws, they act as if those laws don’t apply to them.
They offer me meat from the sacrifices of my offerings, and they eat from it, but the LORD does not accept them. He will now remember their transgression and pay them back for their sins; to Egypt they will return.13The people love to offer sacrifices to me, feasting on the meat, but I do not accept their sacrifices. I will hold my people accountable for their sins, and I will punish them. They will return to Egypt.
"Israel has neglected its maker in building palaces. Judah has multiplied its fortified cities, but I will send fire to their cities, and it will consume their fortresses."14Israel has forgotten its Maker and built great palaces, and Judah has fortified its cities. Therefore, I will send down fire on their cities and will burn up their fortresses.”
