Then God spoke all these words:1And God spoke all these words:
"I am the LORD your God, who brought you out of the land of Egypt, out of the house of slavery. 2"I am the LORD your God, who brought you out of Egypt, out of the land of slavery.
You are to have no other gods besides me.3"You shall have no other gods before me.
"You are not to make for yourselves an idol, or any likeness of what is in heaven above, or on earth below, or in the water under the earth. 4"You shall not make for yourself an image in the form of anything in heaven above or on the earth beneath or in the waters below.
You are not to bow down to them in worship or serve them, because I, the LORD your God, am a jealous God, punishing the children for the iniquity of the parents to the third and fourth generations of those who hate me, 5You shall not bow down to them or worship them; for I, the LORD your God, am a jealous God, punishing the children for the sin of the parents to the third and fourth generation of those who hate me,
but showing gracious love to the thousandth generation of those who love me and keep my commandments.6but showing love to a thousand generations of those who love me and keep my commandments.
"You are not to misuse the name of the LORD your God, because the LORD will not leave the one who misuses his name unpunished.7"You shall not misuse the name of the LORD your God, for the LORD will not hold anyone guiltless who misuses his name.
"Remember to keep the Sabbath day holy.8"Remember the Sabbath day by keeping it holy.
Yu are to labor and do all your work during six days, 9Six days you shall labor and do all your work,
but the seventh day is a Sabbath to the LORD your God. You are not to do any work—neither you, nor your son, nor your daughter, nor your male or female servant, nor your livestock, nor the alien who is within your gates— 10but the seventh day is a sabbath to the LORD your God. On it you shall not do any work, neither you, nor your son or daughter, nor your male or female servant, nor your animals, nor any foreigner residing in your towns.
because the LORD made the heavens and the earth and the sea, and all that is in them, in six days, then he rested on the seventh day. Therefore, the LORD blessed the Sabbath day and made it holy. 11For in six days the LORD made the heavens and the earth, the sea, and all that is in them, but he rested on the seventh day. Therefore the LORD blessed the Sabbath day and made it holy.
"Honor your father and your mother, so that you may live long in the land that the LORD your God is giving you.12"Honor your father and your mother, so that you may live long in the land the LORD your God is giving you.
"You are not to commit murder.13"You shall not murder.
"You are not to commit adultery.14"You shall not commit adultery.
"You are not to steal.15"You shall not steal.
"You are not to testify falsely against your neighbor.16"You shall not give false testimony against your neighbor.
"You are not to covet your neighbor's house. You are not to covet your neighbor's wife, his male or female servant, his ox, his donkey, or anything that belongs to your neighbor."17"You shall not covet your neighbor's house. You shall not covet your neighbor's wife, or his male or female servant, his ox or donkey, or anything that belongs to your neighbor."
All the people experienced the thunder and lightning, the sound of the ram's horn, and the smoking mountain. And as the people experienced it, they trembled and stood at a distance. 18When the people saw the thunder and lightning and heard the trumpet and saw the mountain in smoke, they trembled with fear. They stayed at a distance
They told Moses, "You speak to us and we will listen, but don't let God speak with us, or we may die.19and said to Moses, "Speak to us yourself and we will listen. But do not have God speak to us or we will die."
Moses told the people, "Don't be afraid, for God has come to test you, so that you may fear him in order that you don't sin." 20Moses said to the people, "Do not be afraid. God has come to test you, so that the fear of God will be with you to keep you from sinning."
Then the people stood at a distance, and Moses approached the thick cloud where God was.21The people remained at a distance, while Moses approached the thick darkness where God was.
The LORD told Moses, "This is what you are to say to the Israelis, 'You have seen for yourselves that I spoke to you from heaven. 22Then the LORD said to Moses, "Tell the Israelites this: 'You have seen for yourselves that I have spoken to you from heaven:
You are not to make gods of silver alongside me, nor are you to make for yourselves gods of gold. 23Do not make any gods to be alongside me; do not make for yourselves gods of silver or gods of gold.
You are to make an altar of earth for me, and you are to sacrifice on it your burnt offerings and peace offerings, your sheep, and your cattle. Everywhere I cause my name to be remembered, I'll come to you and bless you. 24"'Make an altar of earth for me and sacrifice on it your burnt offerings and fellowship offerings, your sheep and goats and your cattle. Wherever I cause my name to be honored, I will come to you and bless you.
If you make an altar of stone for me, you must not build it of cut stones, because if you strike it with your chisel, you will profane it. 25If you make an altar of stones for me, do not build it with dressed stones, for you will defile it if you use a tool on it.
You are not to ascend to my altar on steps, so that your nakedness may not be exposed on it.'"26And do not go up to my altar on steps, or your private parts may be exposed.'
