Leviticus 17
ISV Parallel NLT [BSB CSB ESV HCS KJV ISV NAS NET NIV NLT HEB]
International Standard VersionNew Living Translation
The LORD told Moses, 1Then the LORD said to Moses,
"Speak to Aaron, his sons, and all the Israelis and tell them that this is what the LORD has commanded: 2“Give the following instructions to Aaron and his sons and all the people of Israel. This is what the LORD has commanded.
When a person from the house of Israel slaughters an ox, a lamb, or a goat (whether in the camp or outside the camp), 3“If any native Israelite sacrifices a bull or a lamb or a goat anywhere inside or outside the camp
but fails to bring it to the entrance to the Tent of Meeting as an offering in the presence of the tent of the LORD, that person will incur bloodguilt. Because he has shed blood, that person is to be eliminated from contact with his people."4instead of bringing it to the entrance of the Tabernacle to present it as an offering to the LORD, that person will be as guilty as a murderer. Such a person has shed blood and will be cut off from the community.
"This statute is required so that the Israelis may bring their sacrifices that they have been sacrificing to the LORD in the open field to the priest at the entrance to the Tent of Meeting, where they are to slaughter their peace offering to the LORD. 5The purpose of this rule is to stop the Israelites from sacrificing animals in the open fields. It will ensure that they bring their sacrifices to the priest at the entrance of the Tabernacle, so he can present them to the LORD as peace offerings.
The priest is to sprinkle the blood on the LORD's altar at the entrance to the Tent of Meeting and incinerate the fat, making a pleasing aroma to the LORD. 6Then the priest will be able to splatter the blood against the LORD’s altar at the entrance of the Tabernacle, and he will burn the fat as a pleasing aroma to the LORD.
They are no longer to slaughter their sacrifices to the goat demons, with whom they have been committing prostitution. This will be a perpetual statute for you throughout your generations. 7The people must no longer be unfaithful to the LORD by offering sacrifices to the goat idols. This is a permanent law for them, to be observed from generation to generation.
Tell them that if a person from the house of Israel or a resident alien who lives among you brings a whole burnt offering or a sacrifice 8“Give them this command as well. If any native Israelite or foreigner living among you offers a burnt offering or a sacrifice
to the entrance to the Tent of Meeting, but fails to bring it to offer it to the LORD, that person is to be eliminated from contact with his people."9but does not bring it to the entrance of the Tabernacle to offer it to the LORD, that person will be cut off from the community.
"If anyone from the house of Israel or a resident alien who lives among you eats any form of blood, I'll oppose that person who ate the blood and eliminate him from his people, 10“And if any native Israelite or foreigner living among you eats or drinks blood in any form, I will turn against that person and cut him off from the community of your people,
because the life of the flesh is in the blood itself, and I myself have given it to you all so that atonement may be made for your souls on the altar, since the blood itself makes atonement through the life that is in it. 11for the life of the body is in its blood. I have given you the blood on the altar to purify you, making you right with the LORD. It is the blood, given in exchange for a life, that makes purification possible.
This is why I've told the Israelis that no person among you is to eat blood. Even the resident alien who lives among you is not to eat blood.12That is why I have said to the people of Israel, ‘You must never eat or drink blood—neither you nor the foreigners living among you.’
"If a person from the house of Israel or a resident alien who lives among you has hunted live game or a bird that may be eaten, he is to extract its blood and cover it with soil, 13“And if any native Israelite or foreigner living among you goes hunting and kills an animal or bird that is approved for eating, he must drain its blood and cover it with earth.
because the life of any flesh is the blood itself. Therefore, I'm saying to the Israelis that the blood of any flesh is not to be eaten, because the life of any flesh is in its blood. Anyone who eats of it is to be eliminated from contact with his people. 14The life of every creature is in its blood. That is why I have said to the people of Israel, ‘You must never eat or drink blood, for the life of any creature is in its blood.’ So whoever consumes blood will be cut off from the community.
"Any person who eats a carcass or an animal that was torn by beasts (whether that person is native born or is a resident alien), is to wash his clothes and bathe himself with water, and he will remain unclean until evening, and then he'll become clean. 15“And if any native-born Israelites or foreigners eat the meat of an animal that died naturally or was torn up by wild animals, they must wash their clothes and bathe themselves in water. They will remain ceremonially unclean until evening, but then they will be clean.
But if he doesn't wash or bathe his body, then he is to bear the punishment of his iniquity."16But if they do not wash their clothes and bathe themselves, they will be punished for their sin.”
