King James BibleChristian Standard Bible
Whoso loveth instruction loveth knowledge: but he that hateth reproof is brutish.1Whoever loves discipline loves knowledge, but one who hates correction is stupid.
A good man obtaineth favour of the LORD: but a man of wicked devices will he condemn.2One who is good obtains favor from the LORD, but he condemns a person who schemes.
A man shall not be established by wickedness: but the root of the righteous shall not be moved.3No one can be made secure by wickedness, but the root of the righteous is immovable.
A virtuous woman is a crown to her husband: but she that maketh ashamed is as rottenness in his bones.4A wife of noble character is her husband's crown, but a wife who causes shame is like rottenness in his bones.
The thoughts of the righteous are right: but the counsels of the wicked are deceit.5The thoughts of the righteous are just, but guidance from the wicked is deceitful.
The words of the wicked are to lie in wait for blood: but the mouth of the upright shall deliver them.6The words of the wicked are a deadly ambush, but the speech of the upright rescues them.
The wicked are overthrown, and are not: but the house of the righteous shall stand.7The wicked are overthrown and perish, but the house of the righteous will stand.
A man shall be commended according to his wisdom: but he that is of a perverse heart shall be despised.8A man is praised for his insight, but a twisted mind is despised.
He that is despised, and hath a servant, is better than he that honoureth himself, and lacketh bread.9Better to be disregarded, yet have a servant, than to act important but have no food.
A righteous man regardeth the life of his beast: but the tender mercies of the wicked are cruel.10The righteous cares about his animal's health, but even the merciful acts of the wicked are cruel.
He that tilleth his land shall be satisfied with bread: but he that followeth vain persons is void of understanding.11The one who works his land will have plenty of food, but whoever chases fantasies lacks sense.
The wicked desireth the net of evil men: but the root of the righteous yieldeth fruit.12The wicked desire what evil people have caught, but the root of the righteous is productive.
The wicked is snared by the transgression of his lips: but the just shall come out of trouble.13By rebellious speech an evil person is trapped, but a righteous person escapes from trouble.
A man shall be satisfied with good by the fruit of his mouth: and the recompence of a man's hands shall be rendered unto him.14A person will be satisfied with good by the fruit of his mouth, and the work of a person's hands will reward him.
The way of a fool is right in his own eyes: but he that hearkeneth unto counsel is wise.15A fool's way is right in his own eyes, but whoever listens to counsel is wise.
A fool's wrath is presently known: but a prudent man covereth shame.16A fool's displeasure is known at once, but whoever ignores an insult is sensible.
He that speaketh truth sheweth forth righteousness: but a false witness deceit.17Whoever speaks the truth declares what is right, but a false witness speaks deceit.
There is that speaketh like the piercings of a sword: but the tongue of the wise is health.18There is one who speaks rashly, like a piercing sword; but the tongue of the wise brings healing.
The lip of truth shall be established for ever: but a lying tongue is but for a moment.19Truthful lips endure forever, but a lying tongue, only a moment.
Deceit is in the heart of them that imagine evil: but to the counsellers of peace is joy.20Deceit is in the hearts of those who plot evil, but those who promote peace have joy.
There shall no evil happen to the just: but the wicked shall be filled with mischief.21No disaster overcomes the righteous, but the wicked are full of misery.
Lying lips are abomination to the LORD: but they that deal truly are his delight.22Lying lips are detestable to the LORD, but faithful people are his delight.
A prudent man concealeth knowledge: but the heart of fools proclaimeth foolishness.23A shrewd person conceals knowledge, but a foolish heart publicizes stupidity.
The hand of the diligent shall bear rule: but the slothful shall be under tribute.24The diligent hand will rule, but laziness will lead to forced labor.
Heaviness in the heart of man maketh it stoop: but a good word maketh it glad.25Anxiety in a person's heart weighs it down, but a good word cheers it up.
The righteous is more excellent than his neighbour: but the way of the wicked seduceth them.26A righteous person is careful in dealing with his neighbor, but the ways of the wicked lead them astray.
The slothful man roasteth not that which he took in hunting: but the substance of a diligent man is precious.27A lazy hunter doesn't roast his game, but to a diligent person, his wealth is precious.
In the way of righteousness is life; and in the pathway thereof there is no death.28There is life in the path of righteousness, and in its path there is no death.
