King James BibleNET Bible
Whoso loveth instruction loveth knowledge: but he that hateth reproof is brutish.1The one who loves discipline loves knowledge, but the one who hates reproof is stupid.
A good man obtaineth favour of the LORD: but a man of wicked devices will he condemn.2A good person obtains favor from the LORD, but the LORD condemns a person with wicked schemes.
A man shall not be established by wickedness: but the root of the righteous shall not be moved.3No one can be established through wickedness, but a righteous root cannot be moved.
A virtuous woman is a crown to her husband: but she that maketh ashamed is as rottenness in his bones.4A noble wife is the crown of her husband, but the wife who acts shamefully is like rottenness in his bones.
The thoughts of the righteous are right: but the counsels of the wicked are deceit.5The plans of the righteous are just; the counsels of the wicked are deceitful.
The words of the wicked are to lie in wait for blood: but the mouth of the upright shall deliver them.6The words of the wicked lie in wait to shed innocent blood, but the words of the upright will deliver them.
The wicked are overthrown, and are not: but the house of the righteous shall stand.7The wicked are overthrown and perish, but the righteous household will stand.
A man shall be commended according to his wisdom: but he that is of a perverse heart shall be despised.8A person is praised in accordance with his wisdom, but the one who has a twisted mind is despised.
He that is despised, and hath a servant, is better than he that honoureth himself, and lacketh bread.9Better is a person of humble standing who nevertheless has a servant, than one who pretends to be somebody important yet has no food.
A righteous man regardeth the life of his beast: but the tender mercies of the wicked are cruel.10A righteous person cares for the life of his animal, but even the most compassionate acts of the wicked are cruel.
He that tilleth his land shall be satisfied with bread: but he that followeth vain persons is void of understanding.11The one who works his field will have plenty of food, but whoever chases daydreams lacks wisdom.
The wicked desireth the net of evil men: but the root of the righteous yieldeth fruit.12The wicked person desires a stronghold, but the righteous root endures.
The wicked is snared by the transgression of his lips: but the just shall come out of trouble.13The evil person is ensnared by the transgression of his speech, but the righteous person escapes out of trouble.
A man shall be satisfied with good by the fruit of his mouth: and the recompence of a man's hands shall be rendered unto him.14A person will be satisfied with good from the fruit of his words, and the work of his hands will be rendered to him.
The way of a fool is right in his own eyes: but he that hearkeneth unto counsel is wise.15The way of a fool is right in his own opinion, but the one who listens to advice is wise.
A fool's wrath is presently known: but a prudent man covereth shame.16A fool's annoyance is known at once, but the prudent overlooks an insult.
He that speaketh truth sheweth forth righteousness: but a false witness deceit.17The faithful witness tells what is right, but a false witness speaks deceit.
There is that speaketh like the piercings of a sword: but the tongue of the wise is health.18Speaking recklessly is like the thrusts of a sword, but the words of the wise bring healing.
The lip of truth shall be established for ever: but a lying tongue is but for a moment.19The one who tells the truth will endure forever, but the one who lies will last only for a moment.
Deceit is in the heart of them that imagine evil: but to the counsellers of peace is joy.20Deceit is in the heart of those who plot evil, but those who promote peace have joy.
There shall no evil happen to the just: but the wicked shall be filled with mischief.21The righteous do not encounter any harm, but the wicked are filled with calamity.
Lying lips are abomination to the LORD: but they that deal truly are his delight.22The LORD abhors a person who lies, but those who deal truthfully are his delight.
A prudent man concealeth knowledge: but the heart of fools proclaimeth foolishness.23The shrewd person conceals knowledge, but foolish people publicize folly.
The hand of the diligent shall bear rule: but the slothful shall be under tribute.24The diligent person will rule, but the slothful will become a slave.
Heaviness in the heart of man maketh it stoop: but a good word maketh it glad.25Anxiety in a person's heart weighs him down, but an encouraging word brings him joy.
The righteous is more excellent than his neighbour: but the way of the wicked seduceth them.26The righteous person is cautious in his friendship, but the way of the wicked leads them astray.
The slothful man roasteth not that which he took in hunting: but the substance of a diligent man is precious.27The lazy person does not roast his prey, but personal possessions are precious to the diligent.
In the way of righteousness is life; and in the pathway thereof there is no death.28In the path of righteousness there is life, but another path leads to death.
