So when David was old and full of days, he made Solomon his son king over Israel.1When David was old and full of days, he installed his son Solomon as king over Israel.
And he gathered together all the princes of Israel, with the priests and the Levites.2Then he gathered all the leaders of Israel, the priests, and the Levites.
Now the Levites were numbered from the age of thirty years and upward: and their number by their polls, man by man, was thirty and eight thousand.3The Levites 30 years old or more were counted; the total number of men was 38,000 by headcount."
Of which, twenty and four thousand were to set forward the work of the house of the LORD; and six thousand were officers and judges:4Of these," David said, "24,000 are to be in charge of the work on the LORD's temple, 6,000 are to be officers and judges,
Moreover four thousand were porters; and four thousand praised the LORD with the instruments which I made, said David, to praise therewith.5 4,000 are to be gatekeepers, and 4,000 are to praise the LORD with the instruments that I have made for worship."
And David divided them into courses among the sons of Levi, namely, Gershon, Kohath, and Merari.6Then David divided them into divisions according to Levi's sons: Gershom, Kohath, and Merari.
Of the Gershonites were, Laadan, and Shimei.7The Gershonites: Ladan and Shimei.
The sons of Laadan; the chief was Jehiel, and Zetham, and Joel, three.8Ladan's sons: Jehiel was the first, then Zetham, and Joel--three.
The sons of Shimei; Shelomith, and Haziel, and Haran, three. These were the chief of the fathers of Laadan.9Shimei's sons: Shelomoth, Haziel, and Haran--three. Those were the heads of the families of Ladan.
And the sons of Shimei were, Jahath, Zina, and Jeush, and Beriah. These four were the sons of Shimei.10Shimei's sons: Jahath, Zizah, Jeush, and Beriah. Those were Shimei's sons--four.
And Jahath was the chief, and Zizah the second: but Jeush and Beriah had not many sons; therefore they were in one reckoning, according to their father's house.11Jahath was the first and Zizah was the second; however, Jeush and Beriah did not have many sons, so they became an ancestral house and received a single assignment.
The sons of Kohath; Amram, Izhar, Hebron, and Uzziel, four.12Kohath's sons: Amram, Izhar, Hebron, and Uzziel--four.
The sons of Amram; Aaron and Moses: and Aaron was separated, that he should sanctify the most holy things, he and his sons for ever, to burn incense before the LORD, to minister unto him, and to bless in his name for ever.13Amram's sons: Aaron and Moses. Aaron, along with his descendants, was set apart forever to consecrate the most holy things, to burn incense in the presence of Yahweh, to minister to Him, and to pronounce blessings in His name forever.
Now concerning Moses the man of God, his sons were named of the tribe of Levi.14As for Moses the man of God, his sons were named among the tribe of Levi.
The sons of Moses were, Gershom, and Eliezer.15Moses' sons: Gershom and Eliezer.
Of the sons of Gershom, Shebuel was the chief.16Gershom's sons: Shebuel was first.
And the sons of Eliezer were, Rehabiah the chief. And Eliezer had none other sons; but the sons of Rehabiah were very many.17Eliezer's sons were Rehabiah, first; Eliezer did not have any other sons, but Rehabiah's sons were very numerous.
Of the sons of Izhar; Shelomith the chief.18Izhar's sons: Shelomith was first.
Of the sons of Hebron; Jeriah the first, Amariah the second, Jahaziel the third, and Jekameam the fourth.19Hebron's sons: Jeriah was first, Amariah second, Jahaziel third, and Jekameam fourth.
Of the sons of Uzziel; Michah the first, and Jesiah the second.20Uzziel's sons: Micah was first, and Isshiah second.
The sons of Merari; Mahli, and Mushi. The sons of Mahli; Eleazar, and Kish.21Merari's sons: Mahli and Mushi. Mahli's sons: Eleazar and Kish.
And Eleazar died, and had no sons, but daughters: and their brethren the sons of Kish took them.22Eleazar died having no sons, only daughters. Their cousins, the sons of Kish, married them.
The sons of Mushi; Mahli, and Eder, and Jeremoth, three.23Mushi's sons: Mahli, Eder, and Jeremoth--three.
These were the sons of Levi after the house of their fathers; even the chief of the fathers, as they were counted by number of names by their polls, that did the work for the service of the house of the LORD, from the age of twenty years and upward.24These were the sons of Levi by their ancestral houses--the heads of families, according to their registration by name in the headcount--20 years old or more, who worked in the service of the LORD's temple.
For David said, The LORD God of Israel hath given rest unto his people, that they may dwell in Jerusalem for ever:25For David said, "The LORD God of Israel has given rest to His people, and He has come to stay in Jerusalem forever.
And also unto the Levites; they shall no more carry the tabernacle, nor any vessels of it for the service thereof.26Also, the Levites no longer need to carry the tabernacle or any of the equipment for its service"--
For by the last words of David the Levites were numbered from twenty years old and above:27for according to the last words of David, the Levites 20 years old or more were to be counted--"
Because their office was to wait on the sons of Aaron for the service of the house of the LORD, in the courts, and in the chambers, and in the purifying of all holy things, and the work of the service of the house of God;28but their duty will be to assist the sons of Aaron with the service of the LORD's temple, being responsible for the courts and the chambers, the purification of all the holy things, and the work of the service of God's temple--
Both for the shewbread, and for the fine flour for meat offering, and for the unleavened cakes, and for that which is baked in the pan, and for that which is fried, and for all manner of measure and size;29as well as the rows of the bread of the Presence, the fine flour for the grain offering, the wafers of unleavened bread, the baking, the mixing, and all measurements of volume and length.
And to stand every morning to thank and praise the LORD, and likewise at even;30They are also to stand every morning to give thanks and praise to the LORD, and likewise in the evening.
And to offer all burnt sacrifices unto the LORD in the sabbaths, in the new moons, and on the set feasts, by number, according to the order commanded unto them, continually before the LORD:31Whenever burnt offerings are offered to the LORD on the Sabbaths, New Moons, and appointed festivals, they are to do so regularly in the LORD's presence according to the number prescribed for them.
And that they should keep the charge of the tabernacle of the congregation, and the charge of the holy place, and the charge of the sons of Aaron their brethren, in the service of the house of the LORD.32They are to carry out their responsibilities for the tent of meeting, for the holy place, and for their relatives, the sons of Aaron, in the service of the LORD's temple."
