Forasmuch then as Christ hath suffered for us in the flesh, arm yourselves likewise with the same mind: for he that hath suffered in the flesh hath ceased from sin;1Therefore, since Christ suffered in the flesh, equip yourselves also with the same resolve--because the one who suffered in the flesh has finished with sin--
That he no longer should live the rest of his time in the flesh to the lusts of men, but to the will of God.2in order to live the remaining time in the flesh, no longer for human desires, but for God's will.
For the time past of our life may suffice us to have wrought the will of the Gentiles, when we walked in lasciviousness, lusts, excess of wine, revellings, banquetings, and abominable idolatries:3For there has already been enough time spent in doing what the pagans choose to do: carrying on in unrestrained behavior, evil desires, drunkenness, orgies, carousing, and lawless idolatry.
Wherein they think it strange that ye run not with them to the same excess of riot, speaking evil of you:4So they are surprised that you don't plunge with them into the same flood of wild living--and they slander you.
Who shall give account to him that is ready to judge the quick and the dead.5They will give an account to the One who stands ready to judge the living and the dead.
For for this cause was the gospel preached also to them that are dead, that they might be judged according to men in the flesh, but live according to God in the spirit.6For this reason the gospel was also preached to those who are now dead, so that, although they might be judged by men in the fleshly realm, they might live by God in the spiritual realm.
But the end of all things is at hand: be ye therefore sober, and watch unto prayer.7Now the end of all things is near; therefore, be serious and disciplined for prayer.
And above all things have fervent charity among yourselves: for charity shall cover the multitude of sins.8Above all, maintain an intense love for each other, since love covers a multitude of sins.
Use hospitality one to another without grudging.9Be hospitable to one another without complaining.
As every man hath received the gift, even so minister the same one to another, as good stewards of the manifold grace of God.10Based on the gift each one has received, use it to serve others, as good managers of the varied grace of God.
If any man speak, let him speak as the oracles of God; if any man minister, let him do it as of the ability which God giveth: that God in all things may be glorified through Jesus Christ, to whom be praise and dominion for ever and ever. Amen.11If anyone speaks, it should be as one who speaks God's words; if anyone serves, it should be from the strength God provides, so that God may be glorified through Jesus Christ in everything. To Him belong the glory and the power forever and ever. Amen.
Beloved, think it not strange concerning the fiery trial which is to try you, as though some strange thing happened unto you:12Dear friends, don't be surprised when the fiery ordeal comes among you to test you as if something unusual were happening to you.
But rejoice, inasmuch as ye are partakers of Christ's sufferings; that, when his glory shall be revealed, ye may be glad also with exceeding joy.13Instead, rejoice as you share in the sufferings of the Messiah, so that you may also rejoice with great joy at the revelation of His glory.
If ye be reproached for the name of Christ, happy are ye; for the spirit of glory and of God resteth upon you: on their part he is evil spoken of, but on your part he is glorified.14If you are ridiculed for the name of Christ, you are blessed, because the Spirit of glory and of God rests on you.
But let none of you suffer as a murderer, or as a thief, or as an evildoer, or as a busybody in other men's matters.15None of you, however, should suffer as a murderer, a thief, an evildoer, or a meddler.
Yet if any man suffer as a Christian, let him not be ashamed; but let him glorify God on this behalf.16But if anyone suffers as a "Christian," he should not be ashamed but should glorify God in having that name.
For the time is come that judgment must begin at the house of God: and if it first begin at us, what shall the end be of them that obey not the gospel of God?17For the time has come for judgment to begin with God's household, and if it begins with us, what will the outcome be for those who disobey the gospel of God?
And if the righteous scarcely be saved, where shall the ungodly and the sinner appear?18And if a righteous person is saved with difficulty, what will become of the ungodly and the sinner?
Wherefore let them that suffer according to the will of God commit the keeping of their souls to him in well doing, as unto a faithful Creator.19So those who suffer according to God's will should, while doing what is good, entrust themselves to a faithful Creator.
