| 2We give thanks to God always for you all, making mention of you in our prayers; | 2We thank God always for all of you as we mention you constantly in our prayers, |
| 3Remembering without ceasing your work of faith, and labour of love, and patience of hope in our Lord Jesus Christ, in the sight of God and our Father; | 3because we recall in the presence of our God and Father your work of faith and labor of love and endurance of hope in our Lord Jesus Christ. |
| 4Knowing, brethren beloved, your election of God. | 4We know, brothers and sisters loved by God, that he has chosen you, |
| 5For our gospel came not unto you in word only, but also in power, and in the Holy Ghost, and in much assurance; as ye know what manner of men we were among you for your sake. | 5in that our gospel did not come to you merely in words, but in power and in the Holy Spirit and with deep conviction (surely you recall the character we displayed when we came among you to help you). |
| 6And ye became followers of us, and of the Lord, having received the word in much affliction, with joy of the Holy Ghost: | 6And you became imitators of us and of the Lord, when you received the message with joy that comes from the Holy Spirit, despite great affliction. |
| 7So that ye were ensamples to all that believe in Macedonia and Achaia. | 7As a result you became an example to all the believers in Macedonia and in Achaia. |
| 8For from you sounded out the word of the Lord not only in Macedonia and Achaia, but also in every place your faith to God-ward is spread abroad; so that we need not to speak any thing. | 8For from you the message of the Lord has echoed forth not just in Macedonia and Achaia, but in every place reports of your faith in God have spread, so that we do not need to say anything. |
| 9For they themselves shew of us what manner of entering in we had unto you, and how ye turned to God from idols to serve the living and true God; | 9For people everywhere report how you welcomed us and how you turned to God from idols to serve the living and true God |
| 10And to wait for his Son from heaven, whom he raised from the dead, even Jesus, which delivered us from the wrath to come. | 10and to wait for his Son from heaven, whom he raised from the dead, Jesus our deliverer from the coming wrath. |
