Then Jonah prayed to the LORD his God from the stomach of the fish,1From inside the fish, Jonah prayed to the LORD his God,
and he said, "I called out of my distress to the LORD, And He answered me. I cried for help from the depth of Sheol; You heard my voice.2saying: “In my distress I called to the LORD, and He answered me. From the belly of Sheol I called for help, and You heard my voice.
"For You had cast me into the deep, Into the heart of the seas, And the current engulfed me. All Your breakers and billows passed over me.3For You cast me into the deep, into the heart of the seas, and the current swirled about me; all Your breakers and waves swept over me.
"So I said, 'I have been expelled from Your sight. Nevertheless I will look again toward Your holy temple.'4At this, I said, ‘I have been banished from Your sight; yet I will look once more toward Your holy temple.’
"Water encompassed me to the point of death. The great deep engulfed me, Weeds were wrapped around my head.5The waters engulfed me to take my life; the watery depths closed around me; the seaweed wrapped around my head.
"I descended to the roots of the mountains. The earth with its bars was around me forever, But You have brought up my life from the pit, O LORD my God.6To the roots of the mountains I descended; the earth beneath me barred me in forever! But You raised my life from the pit, O LORD my God!
"While I was fainting away, I remembered the LORD, And my prayer came to You, Into Your holy temple.7As my life was fading away, I remembered the LORD. My prayer went up to You, to Your holy temple.
"Those who regard vain idols Forsake their faithfulness,8Those who cling to worthless idols forsake His loving devotion.
But I will sacrifice to You With the voice of thanksgiving. That which I have vowed I will pay. Salvation is from the LORD."9But I, with the voice of thanksgiving, will sacrifice to You. I will fulfill what I have vowed. Salvation is from the LORD!”
Then the LORD commanded the fish, and it vomited Jonah up onto the dry land.10And the LORD commanded the fish, and it vomited Jonah onto dry land.
