In the same way, you wives, be submissive to your own husbands so that even if any of them are disobedient to the word, they may be won without a word by the behavior of their wives,1In the same way, wives, submit yourselves to your own husbands so that, even if some disobey the word, they may be won over without a word by the way their wives live
as they observe your chaste and respectful behavior.2when they observe your pure, reverent lives.
Your adornment must not be merely external-- braiding the hair, and wearing gold jewelry, or putting on dresses;3Don't let your beauty consist of outward things like elaborate hairstyles and wearing gold jewelry,
but let it be the hidden person of the heart, with the imperishable quality of a gentle and quiet spirit, which is precious in the sight of God.4but rather what is inside the heart--the imperishable quality of a gentle and quiet spirit, which is of great worth in God's sight.
For in this way in former times the holy women also, who hoped in God, used to adorn themselves, being submissive to their own husbands;5For in the past, the holy women who put their hope in God also adorned themselves in this way, submitting to their own husbands,
just as Sarah obeyed Abraham, calling him lord, and you have become her children if you do what is right without being frightened by any fear.6just as Sarah obeyed Abraham, calling him lord. You have become her children when you do what is good and do not fear any intimidation.
You husbands in the same way, live with your wives in an understanding way, as with someone weaker, since she is a woman; and show her honor as a fellow heir of the grace of life, so that your prayers will not be hindered.7Husbands, in the same way, live with your wives in an understanding way, as with a weaker partner, showing them honor as coheirs of the grace of life, so that your prayers will not be hindered.
To sum up, all of you be harmonious, sympathetic, brotherly, kindhearted, and humble in spirit;8Finally, all of you be like-minded and sympathetic, love one another, and be compassionate and humble,
not returning evil for evil or insult for insult, but giving a blessing instead; for you were called for the very purpose that you might inherit a blessing.9not paying back evil for evil or insult for insult but, on the contrary, giving a blessing, since you were called for this, so that you may inherit a blessing.
For, "THE ONE WHO DESIRES LIFE, TO LOVE AND SEE GOOD DAYS, MUST KEEP HIS TONGUE FROM EVIL AND HIS LIPS FROM SPEAKING DECEIT.10For the one who wants to love life and to see good days, let him keep his tongue from evil and his lips from speaking deceit,
"HE MUST TURN AWAY FROM EVIL AND DO GOOD; HE MUST SEEK PEACE AND PURSUE IT.11and let him turn away from evil and do what is good. Let him seek peace and pursue it,
"FOR THE EYES OF THE LORD ARE TOWARD THE RIGHTEOUS, AND HIS EARS ATTEND TO THEIR PRAYER, BUT THE FACE OF THE LORD IS AGAINST THOSE WHO DO EVIL."12because the eyes of the Lord are on the righteous and his ears are open to their prayer. But the face of the Lord is against those who do what is evil.
Who is there to harm you if you prove zealous for what is good?13Who then will harm you if you are devoted to what is good?
But even if you should suffer for the sake of righteousness, you are blessed. AND DO NOT FEAR THEIR INTIMIDATION, AND DO NOT BE TROUBLED,14But even if you should suffer for righteousness, you are blessed. Do not fear what they fear or be intimidated,
but sanctify Christ as Lord in your hearts, always being ready to make a defense to everyone who asks you to give an account for the hope that is in you, yet with gentleness and reverence;15but in your hearts regard Christ the Lord as holy, ready at any time to give a defense to anyone who asks you for a reason for the hope that is in you.
and keep a good conscience so that in the thing in which you are slandered, those who revile your good behavior in Christ will be put to shame.16Yet do this with gentleness and respect, keeping a clear conscience, so that when you are accused, those who disparage your good conduct in Christ will be put to shame.
For it is better, if God should will it so, that you suffer for doing what is right rather than for doing what is wrong.17For it is better to suffer for doing good, if that should be God's will, than for doing evil.
For Christ also died for sins once for all, the just for the unjust, so that He might bring us to God, having been put to death in the flesh, but made alive in the spirit;18For Christ also suffered for sins once for all, the righteous for the unrighteous, that he might bring you to God. He was put to death in the flesh but made alive by the Spirit,
in which also He went and made proclamation to the spirits now in prison,19in which he also went and made proclamation to the spirits in prison
who once were disobedient, when the patience of God kept waiting in the days of Noah, during the construction of the ark, in which a few, that is, eight persons, were brought safely through the water.20who in the past were disobedient, when God patiently waited in the days of Noah while the ark was being prepared. In it a few--that is, eight people--were saved through water.
Corresponding to that, baptism now saves you-- not the removal of dirt from the flesh, but an appeal to God for a good conscience-- through the resurrection of Jesus Christ,21Baptism, which corresponds to this, now saves you (not as the removal of dirt from the body, but the pledge of a good conscience toward God) through the resurrection of Jesus Christ,
who is at the right hand of God, having gone into heaven, after angels and authorities and powers had been subjected to Him.22who has gone into heaven and is at the right hand of God with angels, authorities, and powers subject to him.
