Woe to those who are at ease in Zion And to those who feel secure in the mountain of Samaria, The distinguished men of the foremost of nations, To whom the house of Israel comes.1Woe to those who are at ease in Zion and to those who feel secure on the hill of Samaria--the notable people in this first of the nations, those the house of Israel comes to.
Go over to Calneh and look, And go from there to Hamath the great, Then go down to Gath of the Philistines. Are they better than these kingdoms, Or is their territory greater than yours?2Cross over to Calneh and see; go from there to great Hamath; then go down to Gath of the Philistines. Are you better than these kingdoms? Is their territory larger than yours?
Do you put off the day of calamity, And would you bring near the seat of violence?3You dismiss any thought of the evil day and bring in a reign of violence.
Those who recline on beds of ivory And sprawl on their couches, And eat lambs from the flock And calves from the midst of the stall,4They lie on beds inlaid with ivory, sprawled out on their couches, and dine on lambs from the flock and calves from the stall.
Who improvise to the sound of the harp, And like David have composed songs for themselves,5They improvise songs to the sound of the harp and invent their own musical instruments like David.
Who drink wine from sacrificial bowls While they anoint themselves with the finest of oils, Yet they have not grieved over the ruin of Joseph.6They drink wine by the bowlful and anoint themselves with the finest oils but do not grieve over the ruin of Joseph.
Therefore, they will now go into exile at the head of the exiles, And the sprawlers' banqueting will pass away.7Therefore, they will now go into exile as the first of the captives, and the feasting of those who sprawl out will come to an end.
The Lord GOD has sworn by Himself, the LORD God of hosts has declared: "I loathe the arrogance of Jacob, And detest his citadels; Therefore I will deliver up the city and all it contains."8The Lord GOD has sworn by himself--this is the declaration of the LORD, the God of Armies: I loathe Jacob's pride and hate his citadels, so I will hand over the city and everything in it.
And it will be, if ten men are left in one house, they will die.9And if there are ten men left in one house, they will die.
Then one's uncle, or his undertaker, will lift him up to carry out his bones from the house, and he will say to the one who is in the innermost part of the house, "Is anyone else with you?" And that one will say, "No one." Then he will answer, "Keep quiet. For the name of the LORD is not to be mentioned."10A close relative and burner will remove his corpse from the house. He will call to someone in the inner recesses of the house, "Any more with you?" That person will reply, "None." Then he will say, "Silence, because the LORD's name must not be invoked."
For behold, the LORD is going to command that the great house be smashed to pieces and the small house to fragments.11For the LORD commands: The large house will be smashed to pieces, and the small house to rubble.
Do horses run on rocks? Or does one plow them with oxen? Yet you have turned justice into poison And the fruit of righteousness into wormwood,12Do horses gallop on the cliffs? Does anyone plow there with oxen? Yet you have turned justice into poison and the fruit of righteousness into wormwood--
You who rejoice in Lodebar, And say, "Have we not by our own strength taken Karnaim for ourselves?"13you who rejoice over Lo-debar and say, "Didn't we capture Karnaim for ourselves by our own strength?"
"For behold, I am going to raise up a nation against you, O house of Israel," declares the LORD God of hosts, "And they will afflict you from the entrance of Hamath To the brook of the Arabah."14But look, I am raising up a nation against you, house of Israel--this is the declaration of the Lord, the GOD of Armies--and they will oppress you from the entrance of Hamath to the Brook of the Arabah.
