Unless the LORD guards the city, its security forces keep watch uselessly. |
| 2It is vain for you to rise up early, To retire late, To eat the bread of painful labors; For He gives to His beloved even in his sleep. | 2It is useless to get up early and to stay up late, eating the food of exhausting labor— truly he gives sleep to those he loves. |
| 3Behold, children are a gift of the LORD, The fruit of the womb is a reward. | 3Children are a gift from the LORD; a productive womb, the LORD's reward. |
