But the Spirit explicitly says that in later times some will fall away from the faith, paying attention to deceitful spirits and doctrines of demons,1Now the Spirit explicitly says that in the later times some will desert the faith and occupy themselves with deceiving spirits and demonic teachings,
by means of the hypocrisy of liars seared in their own conscience as with a branding iron,2influenced by the hypocrisy of liars whose consciences are seared.
men who forbid marriage and advocate abstaining from foods which God has created to be gratefully shared in by those who believe and know the truth.3They will prohibit marriage and require abstinence from foods that God created to be received with thanksgiving by those who believe and know the truth.
For everything created by God is good, and nothing is to be rejected if it is received with gratitude;4For every creation of God is good and no food is to be rejected if it is received with thanksgiving.
for it is sanctified by means of the word of God and prayer.5For it is sanctified by God's word and by prayer.
In pointing out these things to the brethren, you will be a good servant of Christ Jesus, constantly nourished on the words of the faith and of the sound doctrine which you have been following.6By pointing out such things to the brothers and sisters, you will be a good servant of Christ Jesus, having nourished yourself on the words of the faith and of the good teaching that you have followed.
But have nothing to do with worldly fables fit only for old women. On the other hand, discipline yourself for the purpose of godliness;7But reject those myths fit only for the godless and gullible, and train yourself for godliness.
for bodily discipline is only of little profit, but godliness is profitable for all things, since it holds promise for the present life and also for the life to come.8For "physical exercise has some value, but godliness is valuable in every way. It holds promise for the present life and for the life to come."
It is a trustworthy statement deserving full acceptance.9This saying is trustworthy and deserves full acceptance.
For it is for this we labor and strive, because we have fixed our hope on the living God, who is the Savior of all men, especially of believers.10In fact this is why we work hard and struggle, because we have set our hope on the living God, who is the Savior of all people, especially of believers.
Prescribe and teach these things.11Command and teach these things.
Let no one look down on your youthfulness, but rather in speech, conduct, love, faith and purity, show yourself an example of those who believe.12Let no one look down on you because you are young, but set an example for the believers in your speech, conduct, love, faithfulness, and purity.
Until I come, give attention to the public reading of Scripture, to exhortation and teaching.13Until I come, give attention to the public reading of scripture, to exhortation, to teaching.
Do not neglect the spiritual gift within you, which was bestowed on you through prophetic utterance with the laying on of hands by the presbytery.14Do not neglect the spiritual gift you have, given to you and confirmed by prophetic words when the elders laid hands on you.
Take pains with these things; be absorbed in them, so that your progress will be evident to all.15Take pains with these things; be absorbed in them, so that everyone will see your progress.
Pay close attention to yourself and to your teaching; persevere in these things, for as you do this you will ensure salvation both for yourself and for those who hear you.16Be conscientious about how you live and what you teach. Persevere in this, because by doing so you will save both yourself and those who listen to you.
