Psalm 40
NASB Parallel NLT [BSB CSB ESV HCS KJV ISV NAS NET NIV NLT HEB]
New American Standard Bible 1995New Living Translation
For the choir director. A Psalm of David. I waited patiently for the LORD; And He inclined to me and heard my cry.1I waited patiently for the LORD to help me, and he turned to me and heard my cry.
He brought me up out of the pit of destruction, out of the miry clay, And He set my feet upon a rock making my footsteps firm.2He lifted me out of the pit of despair, out of the mud and the mire. He set my feet on solid ground and steadied me as I walked along.
He put a new song in my mouth, a song of praise to our God; Many will see and fear And will trust in the LORD.3He has given me a new song to sing, a hymn of praise to our God. Many will see what he has done and be amazed. They will put their trust in the LORD.
How blessed is the man who has made the LORD his trust, And has not turned to the proud, nor to those who lapse into falsehood.4Oh, the joys of those who trust the LORD, who have no confidence in the proud or in those who worship idols.
Many, O LORD my God, are the wonders which You have done, And Your thoughts toward us; There is none to compare with You. If I would declare and speak of them, They would be too numerous to count.5O LORD my God, you have performed many wonders for us. Your plans for us are too numerous to list. You have no equal. If I tried to recite all your wonderful deeds, I would never come to the end of them.
Sacrifice and meal offering You have not desired; My ears You have opened; Burnt offering and sin offering You have not required.6You take no delight in sacrifices or offerings. Now that you have made me listen, I finally understand — you don’t require burnt offerings or sin offerings.
Then I said, "Behold, I come; In the scroll of the book it is written of me.7Then I said, “Look, I have come. As is written about me in the Scriptures:
I delight to do Your will, O my God; Your Law is within my heart."8I take joy in doing your will, my God, for your instructions are written on my heart.”
I have proclaimed glad tidings of righteousness in the great congregation; Behold, I will not restrain my lips, O LORD, You know.9I have told all your people about your justice. I have not been afraid to speak out, as you, O LORD, well know.
I have not hidden Your righteousness within my heart; I have spoken of Your faithfulness and Your salvation; I have not concealed Your lovingkindness and Your truth from the great congregation.10I have not kept the good news of your justice hidden in my heart; I have talked about your faithfulness and saving power. I have told everyone in the great assembly of your unfailing love and faithfulness.
You, O LORD, will not withhold Your compassion from me; Your lovingkindness and Your truth will continually preserve me.11LORD, don’t hold back your tender mercies from me. Let your unfailing love and faithfulness always protect me.
For evils beyond number have surrounded me; My iniquities have overtaken me, so that I am not able to see; They are more numerous than the hairs of my head, And my heart has failed me.12For troubles surround me— too many to count! My sins pile up so high I can’t see my way out. They outnumber the hairs on my head. I have lost all courage.
Be pleased, O LORD, to deliver me; Make haste, O LORD, to help me.13Please, LORD, rescue me! Come quickly, LORD, and help me.
Let those be ashamed and humiliated together Who seek my life to destroy it; Let those be turned back and dishonored Who delight in my hurt.14May those who try to destroy me be humiliated and put to shame. May those who take delight in my trouble be turned back in disgrace.
Let those be appalled because of their shame Who say to me, "Aha, aha!"15Let them be horrified by their shame, for they said, “Aha! We’ve got him now!”
Let all who seek You rejoice and be glad in You; Let those who love Your salvation say continually, "The LORD be magnified!"16But may all who search for you be filled with joy and gladness in you. May those who love your salvation repeatedly shout, “The LORD is great!”
Since I am afflicted and needy, Let the Lord be mindful of me. You are my help and my deliverer; Do not delay, O my God.17As for me, since I am poor and needy, let the Lord keep me in his thoughts. You are my helper and my savior. O my God, do not delay.
