So as your fellow elder and a witness of Christ's sufferings and as one who shares in the glory that will be revealed, I urge the elders among you:1I exhort the elders among you as a fellow elder and witness to the sufferings of Christ, as well as one who shares in the glory about to be revealed:
Give a shepherd's care to God's flock among you, exercising oversight not merely as a duty but willingly under God's direction, not for shameful profit but eagerly.2Shepherd God's flock among you, not overseeing out of compulsion but willingly, as God would have you; not out of greed for money but eagerly;
And do not lord it over those entrusted to you, but be examples to the flock.3not lording it over those entrusted to you, but being examples to the flock.
Then when the Chief Shepherd appears, you will receive the crown of glory that never fades away. 4And when the chief Shepherd appears, you will receive the unfading crown of glory.
In the same way, you who are younger, be subject to the elders. And all of you, clothe yourselves with humility toward one another, because God opposes the proud but gives grace to the humble. 5In the same way, you who are younger, be subject to the elders. All of you clothe yourselves with humility toward one another, because God resists the proud but gives grace to the humble.
And God will exalt you in due time, if you humble yourselves under his mighty hand6Humble yourselves, therefore, under the mighty hand of God, so that he may exalt you at the proper time,
by casting all your cares on him because he cares for you.7casting all your cares on him, because he cares about you.
Be sober and alert. Your enemy the devil, like a roaring lion, is on the prowl looking for someone to devour.8Be sober-minded, be alert. Your adversary the devil is prowling around like a roaring lion, looking for anyone he can devour.
Resist him, strong in your faith, because you know that your brothers and sisters throughout the world are enduring the same kinds of suffering.9Resist him, firm in the faith, knowing that the same kind of sufferings are being experienced by your fellow believers throughout the world.
And, after you have suffered for a little while, the God of all grace who called you to his eternal glory in Christ will himself restore, confirm, strengthen, and establish you.10The God of all grace, who called you to his eternal glory in Christ, will himself restore, establish, strengthen, and support you after you have suffered a little while.
To him belongs the power forever. Amen. 11To him be dominion forever. Amen.
Through Silvanus, whom I know to be a faithful brother, I have written to you briefly, in order to encourage you and testify that this is the true grace of God. Stand fast in it.12Through Silvanus, a faithful brother (as I consider him), I have written to you briefly in order to encourage you and to testify that this is the true grace of God. Stand firm in it!
The church in Babylon, chosen together with you, greets you, and so does Mark, my son.13She who is in Babylon, chosen together with you, sends you greetings, as does Mark, my son.
Greet one another with a loving kiss. Peace to all of you who are in Christ. 14Greet one another with a kiss of love. Peace to all of you who are in Christ.
