On the first day of the sixth month of King Darius' second year, the LORD spoke this message through the prophet Haggai to Zerubbabel son of Shealtiel, governor of Judah, and to the high priest Joshua son of Jehozadak: 1In the second year of King Darius, on the first day of the sixth month, the word of the LORD came through the prophet Haggai to Zerubbabel son of Shealtiel, the governor of Judah, and to Joshua son of Jehozadak, the high priest:
The LORD who rules over all says this: "These people have said, 'The time for rebuilding the LORD's temple has not yet come.'"2"The LORD of Armies says this: These people say: The time has not come for the house of the LORD to be rebuilt."
So the LORD spoke through the prophet Haggai as follows:3The word of the LORD came through the prophet Haggai:
"Is it right for you to live in richly paneled houses while my temple is in ruins?4"Is it a time for you yourselves to live in your paneled houses, while this house lies in ruins?"
Here then is what the LORD who rules over all says: 'Think carefully about what you are doing.5Now, the LORD of Armies says this: "Think carefully about your ways:
You have planted much, but have harvested little. You eat, but are never filled. You drink, but are still thirsty. You put on clothes, but are not warm. Those who earn wages end up with holes in their money bags.'" 6You have planted much but harvested little. You eat but never have enough to be satisfied. You drink but never have enough to be happy. You put on clothes but never have enough to get warm. The wage earner puts his wages into a bag with a hole in it."
"Moreover, the LORD who rules over all says: 'Pay close attention to these things also.7The LORD of Armies says this: "Think carefully about your ways.
Go up to the hill country and bring back timber to build the temple. Then I will be pleased and honored,' says the LORD.8Go up into the hills, bring down lumber, and build the house; and I will be pleased with it and be glorified," says the LORD.
You expected a large harvest, but instead there was little, and when you brought it home it disappeared right away. Why?' asks the LORD who rules over all. 'Because my temple remains in ruins, thanks to each of you favoring his own house!9"You expected much, but then it amounted to little. When you brought the harvest to your house, I ruined it. Why?" This is the declaration of the LORD of Armies. "Because my house still lies in ruins, while each of you is busy with his own house.
This is why the sky has held back its dew and the earth its produce.10So on your account, the skies have withheld the dew and the land its crops.
Moreover, I have called for a drought that will affect the fields, the hill country, the grain, new wine, fresh olive oil, and everything that grows from the ground; it also will harm people, animals, and everything they produce.'" 11I have summoned a drought on the fields and the hills, on the grain, new wine, fresh oil, and whatever the ground yields, on man and animal, and on all that your hands produce."
Then Zerubbabel son of Shealtiel and the high priest Joshua son of Jehozadak, along with the whole remnant of the people, obeyed the LORD their God. They responded favorably to the message of the prophet Haggai, who spoke just as the LORD their God had instructed him, and the people began to respect the LORD.12Then Zerubbabel son of Shealtiel, the high priest Joshua son of Jehozadak, and the entire remnant of the people obeyed the LORD their God and the words of the prophet Haggai, because the LORD their God had sent him. So the people feared the LORD.
Then Haggai, the LORD's messenger, spoke the LORD's word to the people: "I am with you!" says the LORD.13Then Haggai, the LORD's messenger, delivered the LORD's message to the people: "I am with you--this is the LORD's declaration."
So the LORD energized and encouraged Zerubbabel son of Shealtiel, governor of Judah, the high priest Joshua son of Jehozadak, and the whole remnant of the people. They came and worked on the temple of their God, the LORD who rules over all.14The LORD roused the spirit of Zerubbabel son of Shealtiel, governor of Judah, the spirit of the high priest Joshua son of Jehozadak, and the spirit of all the remnant of the people. They began work on the house of the LORD of Armies, their God,
This took place on the twenty-fourth day of the sixth month of King Darius' second year. 15on the twenty-fourth day of the sixth month, in the second year of King Darius.
