For the music director, Jeduthun; a psalm of David. I decided, "I will watch what I say and make sure I do not sin with my tongue. I will put a muzzle over my mouth while in the presence of an evil man." 1I said, "I will guard my ways so that I may not sin with my tongue; I will guard my mouth with a muzzle as long as the wicked are in my presence."
I was stone silent; I held back the urge to speak. My frustration grew; 2I was speechless and quiet; I kept silent, even from speaking good, and my pain intensified.
my anxiety intensified. As I thought about it, I became impatient. Finally I spoke these words: 3My heart grew hot within me; as I mused, a fire burned. I spoke with my tongue:
"O LORD, help me understand my mortality and the brevity of life! Let me realize how quickly my life will pass! 4"LORD, make me aware of my end and the number of my days so that I will know how short-lived I am.
Look, you make my days short-lived, and my life span is nothing from your perspective. Surely all people, even those who seem secure, are nothing but vapor. 5In fact, you have made my days just inches long, and my life span is as nothing to you. Yes, every human being stands as only a vapor. Selah
Surely people go through life as mere ghosts. Surely they accumulate worthless wealth without knowing who will eventually haul it away." 6Yes, a person goes about like a mere shadow. Indeed, they rush around in vain, gathering possessions without knowing who will get them.
But now, O Lord, upon what am I relying? You are my only hope! 7"Now, Lord, what do I wait for? My hope is in you.
Deliver me from all my sins of rebellion! Do not make me the object of fools' insults! 8Rescue me from all my transgressions; do not make me the taunt of fools.
I am silent and cannot open my mouth because of what you have done. 9I am speechless; I do not open my mouth because of what you have done.
Please stop wounding me! You have almost beaten me to death! 10Remove your torment from me. Because of the force of your hand I am finished.
You severely discipline people for their sins; like a moth you slowly devour their strength. Surely all people are a mere vapor. (Selah) 11You discipline a person with punishment for iniquity, consuming like a moth what is precious to him; yes, every human being is only a vapor. Selah
Hear my prayer, O LORD! Listen to my cry for help! Do not ignore my sobbing! For I am dependent on you, like one residing outside his native land; I am at your mercy, just as all my ancestors were. 12"Hear my prayer, LORD, and listen to my cry for help; do not be silent at my tears. For I am here with you as an alien, a temporary resident like all my ancestors.
Turn your angry gaze away from me, so I can be happy before I pass away. 13Turn your angry gaze from me so that I may be cheered up before I die and am gone."
