| 1The LORD's angelic messenger went up from Gilgal to Bokim. He said, "I brought you up from Egypt and led you into the land I had solemnly promised to give to your ancestors. I said, 'I will never break my agreement with you, | 1The Angel of the LORD went up from Gilgal to Bochim and said, "I brought you out of Egypt and led you into the land I had promised to your fathers. I also said: I will never break My covenant with you. |
| 2but you must not make an agreement with the people who live in this land. You should tear down the altars where they worship.' But you have disobeyed me. Why would you do such a thing? | 2You are not to make a covenant with the people who are living in this land, and you are to tear down their altars. But you have not obeyed Me. What is this you have done? |
| 3At that time I also warned you, 'If you disobey, I will not drive out the Canaanites before you. They will ensnare you and their gods will lure you away.'" | 3Therefore, I now say: I will not drive out these people before you. They will be thorns in your sides, and their gods will be a trap for you." |
| 4When the LORD's messenger finished speaking these words to all the Israelites, the people wept loudly. | 4When the Angel of the LORD had spoken these words to all the Israelites, the people wept loudly. |

| 7The people worshiped the LORD throughout Joshua's lifetime and as long as the elderly men who outlived him remained alive. | 12They abandoned the LORD God of their ancestors who brought them out of the land of Egypt. They followed other gods--the gods of the nations who lived around them. They went after other gods from the surrounding peoples and bowed down to them. They infuriated the LORD, |
| 13They abandoned the LORD and worshiped Baal and the Ashtars. | 13for they abandoned Him and worshiped Baal and the Ashtoreths. |
| 14The LORD was furious with Israel and handed them over to robbers who plundered them. He turned them over to their enemies who lived around them. They could not withstand their enemies' attacks. | 14The LORD's anger burned against Israel, and He handed them over to marauders who raided them. He sold them to the enemies around them, and they could no longer resist their enemies. |
| 15Whenever they went out to fight, the LORD did them harm, just as he had warned and solemnly vowed he would do. They suffered greatly. | 15Whenever the Israelites went out, the LORD was against them and brought disaster on them, just as He had promised and sworn to them. So they suffered greatly. |
| 16The LORD raised up leaders who delivered them from these robbers. | 16The LORD raised up judges, who saved them from the power of their marauders, |
| 17But they did not obey their leaders. Instead they prostituted themselves to other gods and worshiped them. They quickly turned aside from the path their ancestors had walked. Their ancestors had obeyed the LORD's commands, but they did not. | 17but they did not listen to their judges. Instead, they prostituted themselves with other gods, bowing down to them. They quickly turned from the way of their fathers, who had walked in obedience to the LORD's commands. They did not do as their fathers did. |
| 18When the LORD raised up leaders for them, the LORD was with each leader and delivered the people from their enemies while the leader remained alive. The LORD felt sorry for them when they cried out in agony because of what their harsh oppressors did to them. | 18Whenever the LORD raised up a judge for the Israelites, the LORD was with him and saved the people from the power of their enemies while the judge was still alive. The LORD was moved to pity whenever they groaned because of those who were oppressing and afflicting them. |
| 19When a leader died, the next generation would again act more wickedly than the previous one. They would follow after other gods, worshiping them and bowing down to them. They did not give up their practices or their stubborn ways. | 19Whenever the judge died, the Israelites would act even more corruptly than their fathers, going after other gods to worship and bow down to them. They did not turn from their evil practices or their obstinate ways. |
| 20The LORD was furious with Israel. He said, "This nation has violated the terms of the agreement I made with their ancestors by disobeying me. | 20The LORD's anger burned against Israel, and He declared, "Because this nation has violated My covenant that I made with their fathers and disobeyed Me, |
| 21So I will no longer remove before them any of the nations that Joshua left unconquered when he died. | 21I will no longer drive out before them any of the nations Joshua left when he died. |
| 22Joshua left those nations to test Israel. I wanted to see whether or not the people would carefully walk in the path marked out by the LORD, as their ancestors were careful to do." | 22I did this to test Israel and to see whether they would keep the LORD's way by walking in it, as their fathers had." |
| 23This is why the LORD permitted these nations to remain and did not conquer them immediately; he did not hand them over to Joshua. | 23The LORD left these nations and did not drive them out immediately. He did not hand them over to Joshua. |
