Moses told the leaders of the tribes concerning the Israelites, "This is what the LORD has commanded:1Moses told the leaders of the Israelite tribes, "This is what the LORD has commanded:
If a man makes a vow to the LORD or takes an oath of binding obligation on himself, he must not break his word, but must do whatever he has promised. 2When a man makes a vow to the LORD or swears an oath to put himself under an obligation, he must not break his word; he must do whatever he has promised."
"If a young woman who is still living in her father's house makes a vow to the LORD or places herself under an obligation,3When a woman in her father's house during her youth makes a vow to the LORD or puts herself under an obligation,
and her father hears of her vow or the obligation to which she has pledged herself, and her father remains silent about her, then all her vows will stand, and every obligation to which she has pledged herself will stand.4and her father hears about her vow or the obligation she put herself under, and he says nothing to her, all her vows and every obligation she put herself under are binding.
But if her father overrules her when he hears about it, then none of her vows or her obligations which she has pledged for herself will stand. And the LORD will release her from it, because her father overruled her. 5But if her father prohibits her on the day he hears about it, none of her vows and none of the obligations she put herself under are binding. The LORD will absolve her because her father has prohibited her."
"And if she marries a husband while under a vow, or she uttered anything impulsively by which she has pledged herself,6If a woman marries while her vows or the rash commitment she herself made are binding,
and her husband hears about it, but remains silent about her when he hears about it, then her vows will stand and her obligations which she has pledged for herself will stand.7and her husband hears about it and says nothing to her when he finds out, her vows are binding, and the obligations she put herself under are binding.
But if when her husband hears it he overrules her, then he will nullify the vow she has taken, and whatever she uttered impulsively which she has pledged for herself. And the LORD will release her from it. 8But if her husband prohibits her when he hears about it, he will cancel her vow that is binding or the rash commitment she herself made, and the LORD will forgive her."
"But every vow of a widow or of a divorced woman which she has pledged for herself will remain intact.9Every vow a widow or divorced woman puts herself under is binding on her."
If she made the vow in her husband's house or put herself under obligation with an oath,10If a woman in her husband's house has made a vow or put herself under an obligation with an oath,
and her husband heard about it, but remained silent about her, and did not overrule her, then all her vows will stand, and every obligation which she pledged for herself will stand.11and her husband hears about it, says nothing to her, and does not prohibit her, all her vows are binding, and every obligation she put herself under is binding.
But if her husband clearly nullifies them when he hears them, then whatever she says by way of vows or obligations will not stand. Her husband has made them void, and the LORD will release her from them. 12But if her husband cancels them on the day he hears about it, nothing that came from her lips, whether her vows or her obligation, is binding. Her husband has canceled them, and the LORD will absolve her.
"Any vow or sworn obligation that would bring affliction to her, her husband can confirm or nullify.13Her husband may confirm or cancel any vow or any sworn obligation to deny herself.
But if her husband remains completely silent about her from day to day, he thus confirms all her vows or all her obligations which she is under; he confirms them because he remained silent about when he heard them.14If her husband says nothing at all to her from day to day, he confirms all her vows and obligations, which are binding. He has confirmed them because he said nothing to her when he heard about them.
But if he should nullify them after he has heard them, then he will bear her iniquity." 15But if he cancels them after he hears about them, he will be responsible for her commitment."
These are the statutes that the LORD commanded Moses, relating to a man and his wife, and a father and his young daughter who is still living in her father's house. 16These are the statutes that the LORD commanded Moses concerning the relationship between a man and his wife, or between a father and his daughter in his house during her youth.
