For the music director; a psalm of David. In you, O LORD, I have taken shelter! Never let me be humiliated! Vindicate me by rescuing me! 1For the choir director. A Davidic psalm. LORD, I seek refuge in You; let me never be disgraced. Save me by Your righteousness.
Listen to me! Quickly deliver me! Be my protector and refuge, a stronghold where I can be safe! 2Listen closely to me; rescue me quickly. Be a rock of refuge for me, a mountain fortress to save me.
For you are my high ridge and my stronghold; for the sake of your own reputation you lead me and guide me. 3For You are my rock and my fortress; You lead and guide me because of Your name.
You will free me from the net they hid for me, for you are my place of refuge. 4You will free me from the net that is secretly set for me, for You are my refuge.
Into your hand I entrust my life; you will rescue me, O LORD, the faithful God. 5Into Your hand I entrust my spirit; You redeem me, LORD, God of truth.
I hate those who serve worthless idols, but I trust in the LORD. 6I hate those who are devoted to worthless idols, but I trust in the LORD.
I will be happy and rejoice in your faithfulness, because you notice my pain and you are aware of how distressed I am. 7I will rejoice and be glad in Your faithful love because You have seen my affliction. You have known the troubles of my life
You do not deliver me over to the power of the enemy; you enable me to stand in a wide open place. 8and have not handed me over to the enemy. You have set my feet in a spacious place.
Have mercy on me, for I am in distress! My eyes grow dim from suffering. I have lost my strength. 9Be gracious to me, LORD, because I am in distress; my eyes are worn out from angry sorrow-- my whole being as well.
For my life nears its end in pain; my years draw to a close as I groan. My strength fails me because of my sin, and my bones become brittle. 10Indeed, my life is consumed with grief and my years with groaning; my strength has failed because of my sinfulness, and my bones waste away.
Because of all my enemies, people disdain me; my neighbors are appalled by my suffering--those who know me are horrified by my condition; those who see me in the street run away from me. 11I am ridiculed by all my adversaries and even by my neighbors. I am dreaded by my acquaintances; those who see me in the street run from me.
I am forgotten, like a dead man no one thinks about; I am regarded as worthless, like a broken jar. 12I am forgotten: gone from memory like a dead person--like broken pottery.
For I hear what so many are saying, the terrifying news that comes from every direction. When they plot together against me, they figure out how they can take my life. 13I have heard the gossip of many; terror is on every side. When they conspired against me, they plotted to take my life.
But I trust in you, O LORD! I declare, "You are my God!" 14But I trust in You, LORD; I say, "You are my God."
You determine my destiny! Rescue me from the power of my enemies and those who chase me. 15The course of my life is in Your power; deliver me from the power of my enemies and from my persecutors.
Smile on your servant! Deliver me because of your faithfulness! 16Show Your favor to Your servant; save me by Your faithful love.
O LORD, do not let me be humiliated, for I call out to you! May evil men be humiliated! May they go wailing to the grave! 17 LORD, do not let me be disgraced when I call on You. Let the wicked be disgraced; let them be silent in Sheol.
May lying lips be silenced--lips that speak defiantly against the innocent with arrogance and contempt! 18Let lying lips be quieted; they speak arrogantly against the righteous with pride and contempt.
How great is your favor, which you store up for your loyal followers! In plain sight of everyone you bestow it on those who take shelter in you. 19How great is Your goodness that You have stored up for those who fear You and accomplished in the sight of everyone for those who take refuge in You.
You hide them with you, where they are safe from the attacks of men; you conceal them in a shelter, where they are safe from slanderous attacks. 20You hide them in the protection of Your presence; You conceal them in a shelter from the schemes of men, from quarrelsome tongues.
The LORD deserves praise for he demonstrated his amazing faithfulness to me when I was besieged by enemies. 21May the LORD be praised, for He has wonderfully shown His faithful love to me in a city under siege.
I jumped to conclusions and said, "I am cut off from your presence!" But you heard my plea for mercy when I cried out to you for help. 22In my alarm I had said," I am cut off from Your sight." But You heard the sound of my pleading when I cried to You for help.
Love the LORD, all you faithful followers of his! The LORD protects those who have integrity, but he pays back in full the one who acts arrogantly. 23Love the LORD, all His faithful ones. The LORD protects the loyal, but fully repays the arrogant.
Be strong and confident, all you who wait on the LORD! 24Be strong and courageous, all you who put your hope in the LORD.
