For the music director; according to the al-tashcheth style; a prayer of David, written when Saul sent men to surround his house and murder him. Deliver me from my enemies, my God! Protect me from those who attack me! 1For the choir director: "Do Not Destroy." A Davidic Miktam. When Saul sent agents to watch the house and kill him. Deliver me from my enemies, my God; protect me from those who rise up against me.
Deliver me from evildoers! Rescue me from violent men! 2Deliver me from those who practice sin, and save me from men of bloodshed.
For look, they wait to ambush me; powerful men stalk me, but not because I have rebelled or sinned, O LORD. 3 LORD, look! They set an ambush for me. Powerful men attack me, but not because of any sin or rebellion of mine.
Though I have done nothing wrong, they are anxious to attack. Spring into action and help me! Take notice of me! 4For no fault of mine, they run and take up a position. Awake to help me, and take notice.
You, O LORD God, the invincible warrior, the God of Israel, rouse yourself and punish all the nations! Have no mercy on any treacherous evildoers! (Selah) 5 LORD God of Hosts, You are the God of Israel, rise up to punish all the nations; do not show grace to any wicked traitors. Selah
They return in the evening; they growl like a dog and prowl around outside the city. 6They return at evening, snarling like dogs and prowling around the city.
Look, they hurl insults at me and openly threaten to kill me, for they say, "Who hears?" 7Look, they spew from their mouths-- sharp words from their lips." For who," they say, "will hear?"
But you, O LORD, laugh in disgust at them; you taunt all the nations. 8But You laugh at them, LORD; You ridicule all the nations.
You are my source of strength! I will wait for you! For God is my refuge. 9I will keep watch for You, my strength, because God is my stronghold.
The God who loves me will help me; God will enable me to triumph over my enemies. 10My faithful God will come to meet me; God will let me look down on my adversaries.
Do not strike them dead suddenly, because then my people might forget the lesson. Use your power to make them homeless vagabonds and then bring them down, O Lord who shields us! 11Do not kill them; otherwise, my people will forget. By Your power, make them homeless wanderers and bring them down, Lord, our shield.
They speak sinful words. So let them be trapped by their own pride and by the curses and lies they speak! 12For the sin of their mouths and the words of their lips, let them be caught in their pride. They utter curses and lies.
Angrily wipe them out! Wipe them out so they vanish! Let them know that God rules in Jacob and to the ends of the earth! (Selah) 13Consume them in rage; consume them until they are gone. Then people will know throughout the earth that God rules over Jacob. Selah
They return in the evening; they growl like a dog and prowl around outside the city. 14And they return at evening, snarling like dogs and prowling around the city.
They wander around looking for something to eat; they refuse to sleep until they are full. 15They scavenge for food; they growl if they are not satisfied.
As for me, I will sing about your strength; I will praise your loyal love in the morning. For you are my refuge and my place of shelter when I face trouble. 16But I will sing of Your strength and will joyfully proclaim Your faithful love in the morning. For You have been a stronghold for me, a refuge in my day of trouble.
You are my source of strength! I will sing praises to you! For God is my refuge, the God who loves me. 17To You, my strength, I sing praises, because God is my stronghold-- my faithful God.
