When Abram was 99 years old, the LORD appeared to him and said, "I am the sovereign God. Walk before me and be blameless.1Now when Abram was ninety-nine years old, the LORD appeared to Abram and said to him, "I am God Almighty; Walk before Me, and be blameless.
Then I will confirm my covenant between me and you, and I will give you a multitude of descendants." 2"I will establish My covenant between Me and you, And I will multiply you exceedingly."
Abram bowed down with his face to the ground, and God said to him,3Abram fell on his face, and God talked with him, saying,
"As for me, this is my covenant with you: You will be the father of a multitude of nations.4"As for Me, behold, My covenant is with you, And you will be the father of a multitude of nations.
No longer will your name be Abram. Instead, your name will be Abraham because I will make you the father of a multitude of nations.5"No longer shall your name be called Abram, But your name shall be Abraham; For I will make you the father of a multitude of nations.
I will make you extremely fruitful. I will make nations of you, and kings will descend from you.6"I will make you exceedingly fruitful, and I will make nations of you, and kings will come forth from you.
I will confirm my covenant as a perpetual covenant between me and you. It will extend to your descendants after you throughout their generations. I will be your God and the God of your descendants after you.7"I will establish My covenant between Me and you and your descendants after you throughout their generations for an everlasting covenant, to be God to you and to your descendants after you.
I will give the whole land of Canaan--the land where you are now residing--to you and your descendants after you as a permanent possession. I will be their God." 8"I will give to you and to your descendants after you, the land of your sojournings, all the land of Canaan, for an everlasting possession; and I will be their God."
Then God said to Abraham, "As for you, you must keep the covenantal requirement I am imposing on you and your descendants after you throughout their generations.9God said further to Abraham, "Now as for you, you shall keep My covenant, you and your descendants after you throughout their generations.
This is my requirement that you and your descendants after you must keep: Every male among you must be circumcised.10"This is My covenant, which you shall keep, between Me and you and your descendants after you: every male among you shall be circumcised.
You must circumcise the flesh of your foreskins. This will be a reminder of the covenant between me and you.11"And you shall be circumcised in the flesh of your foreskin, and it shall be the sign of the covenant between Me and you.
Throughout your generations every male among you who is eight days old must be circumcised, whether born in your house or bought with money from any foreigner who is not one of your descendants.12"And every male among you who is eight days old shall be circumcised throughout your generations, a servant who is born in the house or who is bought with money from any foreigner, who is not of your descendants.
They must indeed be circumcised, whether born in your house or bought with money. The sign of my covenant will be visible in your flesh as a permanent reminder.13"A servant who is born in your house or who is bought with your money shall surely be circumcised; thus shall My covenant be in your flesh for an everlasting covenant.
Any uncircumcised male who has not been circumcised in the flesh of his foreskin will be cut off from his people--he has failed to carry out my requirement." 14"But an uncircumcised male who is not circumcised in the flesh of his foreskin, that person shall be cut off from his people; he has broken My covenant."
Then God said to Abraham, "As for your wife, you must no longer call her Sarai; Sarah will be her name.15Then God said to Abraham, "As for Sarai your wife, you shall not call her name Sarai, but Sarah shall be her name.
I will bless her and will give you a son through her. I will bless her and she will become a mother of nations. Kings of countries will come from her!" 16"I will bless her, and indeed I will give you a son by her. Then I will bless her, and she shall be a mother of nations; kings of peoples will come from her."
Then Abraham bowed down with his face to the ground and laughed as he said to himself, "Can a son be born to a man who is a hundred years old? Can Sarah bear a child at the age of ninety?"17Then Abraham fell on his face and laughed, and said in his heart, "Will a child be born to a man one hundred years old? And will Sarah, who is ninety years old, bear a child?"
Abraham said to God, "O that Ishmael might live before you!" 18And Abraham said to God, "Oh that Ishmael might live before You!"
God said, "No, Sarah your wife is going to bear you a son, and you will name him Isaac. I will confirm my covenant with him as a perpetual covenant for his descendants after him.19But God said, "No, but Sarah your wife will bear you a son, and you shall call his name Isaac; and I will establish My covenant with him for an everlasting covenant for his descendants after him.
As for Ishmael, I have heard you. I will indeed bless him, make him fruitful, and give him a multitude of descendants. He will become the father of twelve princes; I will make him into a great nation.20"As for Ishmael, I have heard you; behold, I will bless him, and will make him fruitful and will multiply him exceedingly. He shall become the father of twelve princes, and I will make him a great nation.
But I will establish my covenant with Isaac, whom Sarah will bear to you at this set time next year."21"But My covenant I will establish with Isaac, whom Sarah will bear to you at this season next year."
When he finished speaking with Abraham, God went up from him. 22When He finished talking with him, God went up from Abraham.
Abraham took his son Ishmael and every male in his household (whether born in his house or bought with money) and circumcised them on that very same day, just as God had told him to do.23Then Abraham took Ishmael his son, and all the servants who were born in his house and all who were bought with his money, every male among the men of Abraham's household, and circumcised the flesh of their foreskin in the very same day, as God had said to him.
Now Abraham was 99 years old when he was circumcised;24Now Abraham was ninety-nine years old when he was circumcised in the flesh of his foreskin.
his son Ishmael was thirteen years old when he was circumcised.25And Ishmael his son was thirteen years old when he was circumcised in the flesh of his foreskin.
Abraham and his son Ishmael were circumcised on the very same day.26In the very same day Abraham was circumcised, and Ishmael his son.
All the men of his household, whether born in his household or bought with money from a foreigner, were circumcised with him. 27All the men of his household, who were born in the house or bought with money from a foreigner, were circumcised with him.
