Then Job replied: 1Then Job answered,
"I have heard many things like these before. What miserable comforters are you all! 2"I have heard many such things; Sorry comforters are you all.
Will there be an end to your windy words? Or what provokes you that you answer? 3"Is there no limit to windy words? Or what plagues you that you answer?
I also could speak like you, if you were in my place; I could pile up words against you and I could shake my head at you. 4"I too could speak like you, If I were in your place. I could compose words against you And shake my head at you.
But I would strengthen you with my words; comfort from my lips would bring you relief. 5"I could strengthen you with my mouth, And the solace of my lips could lessen your pain.
"But if I speak, my pain is not relieved, and if I refrain from speaking--how much of it goes away? 6"If I speak, my pain is not lessened, And if I hold back, what has left me?
Surely now he has worn me out, you have devastated my entire household. 7"But now He has exhausted me; You have laid waste all my company.
You have seized me, and it has become a witness; my leanness has risen up against me and testifies against me. 8"You have shriveled me up, It has become a witness; And my leanness rises up against me, It testifies to my face.
His anger has torn me and persecuted me; he has gnashed at me with his teeth; my adversary locks his eyes on me. 9"His anger has torn me and hunted me down, He has gnashed at me with His teeth; My adversary glares at me.
People have opened their mouths against me, they have struck my cheek in scorn; they unite together against me. 10"They have gaped at me with their mouth, They have slapped me on the cheek with contempt; They have massed themselves against me.
God abandons me to evil men, and throws me into the hands of wicked men. 11"God hands me over to ruffians And tosses me into the hands of the wicked.
I was in peace, and he has shattered me. He has seized me by the neck and crushed me. He has made me his target; 12"I was at ease, but He shattered me, And He has grasped me by the neck and shaken me to pieces; He has also set me up as His target.
his archers surround me. Without pity he pierces my kidneys and pours out my gall on the ground. 13"His arrows surround me. Without mercy He splits my kidneys open; He pours out my gall on the ground.
He breaks through against me, time and time again; he rushes against me like a warrior. 14"He breaks through me with breach after breach; He runs at me like a warrior.
I have sewed sackcloth on my skin, and buried my horn in the dust; 15"I have sewed sackcloth over my skin And thrust my horn in the dust.
my face is reddened because of weeping, and on my eyelids there is a deep darkness, 16"My face is flushed from weeping, And deep darkness is on my eyelids,
although there is no violence in my hands and my prayer is pure. 17Although there is no violence in my hands, And my prayer is pure.
"O earth, do not cover my blood, nor let there be a secret place for my cry. 18"O earth, do not cover my blood, And let there be no resting place for my cry.
Even now my witness is in heaven; my advocate is on high. 19"Even now, behold, my witness is in heaven, And my advocate is on high.
My intercessor is my friend as my eyes pour out tears to God; 20"My friends are my scoffers; My eye weeps to God.
and he contends with God on behalf of man as a man pleads for his friend. 21"O that a man might plead with God As a man with his neighbor!
For the years that lie ahead are few, and then I will go on the way of no return. 22"For when a few years are past, I shall go the way of no return.
