A song of ascents, by David. "If the LORD had not been on our side"--let Israel say this!--1A Song of Ascents, of David. "Had it not been the LORD who was on our side," Let Israel now say,
if the LORD had not been on our side, when men attacked us, 2"Had it not been the LORD who was on our side When men rose up against us,
they would have swallowed us alive, when their anger raged against us. 3Then they would have swallowed us alive, When their anger was kindled against us;
The water would have overpowered us; the current would have overwhelmed us. 4Then the waters would have engulfed us, The stream would have swept over our soul;
The raging water would have overwhelmed us. 5Then the raging waters would have swept over our soul."
The LORD deserves praise, for he did not hand us over as prey to their teeth. 6Blessed be the LORD, Who has not given us to be torn by their teeth.
We escaped with our lives, like a bird from a hunter's snare. The snare broke, and we escaped. 7Our soul has escaped as a bird out of the snare of the trapper; The snare is broken and we have escaped.
Our deliverer is the LORD, the Creator of heaven and earth. 8Our help is in the name of the LORD, Who made heaven and earth.
