NET BibleNew International Version
Now on the topic of times and seasons, brothers and sisters, you have no need for anything to be written to you.1Now, brothers and sisters, about times and dates we do not need to write to you,
For you know quite well that the day of the Lord will come in the same way as a thief in the night.2for you know very well that the day of the Lord will come like a thief in the night.
Now when they are saying, "There is peace and security," then sudden destruction comes on them, like labor pains on a pregnant woman, and they will surely not escape.3While people are saying, "Peace and safety," destruction will come on them suddenly, as labor pains on a pregnant woman, and they will not escape.
But you, brothers and sisters, are not in the darkness for the day to overtake you like a thief would.4But you, brothers and sisters, are not in darkness so that this day should surprise you like a thief.
For you all are sons of the light and sons of the day. We are not of the night nor of the darkness.5You are all children of the light and children of the day. We do not belong to the night or to the darkness.
So then we must not sleep as the rest, but must stay alert and sober.6So then, let us not be like others, who are asleep, but let us be awake and sober.
For those who sleep, sleep at night and those who get drunk are drunk at night.7For those who sleep, sleep at night, and those who get drunk, get drunk at night.
But since we are of the day, we must stay sober by putting on the breastplate of faith and love and as a helmet our hope for salvation.8But since we belong to the day, let us be sober, putting on faith and love as a breastplate, and the hope of salvation as a helmet.
For God did not destine us for wrath but for gaining salvation through our Lord Jesus Christ.9For God did not appoint us to suffer wrath but to receive salvation through our Lord Jesus Christ.
He died for us so that whether we are alert or asleep we will come to life together with him.10He died for us so that, whether we are awake or asleep, we may live together with him.
Therefore encourage one another and build up each other, just as you are in fact doing. 11Therefore encourage one another and build each other up, just as in fact you are doing.
Now we ask you, brothers and sisters, to acknowledge those who labor among you and preside over you in the Lord and admonish you,12Now we ask you, brothers and sisters, to acknowledge those who work hard among you, who care for you in the Lord and who admonish you.
and to esteem them most highly in love because of their work. Be at peace among yourselves.13Hold them in the highest regard in love because of their work. Live in peace with each other.
And we urge you, brothers and sisters, admonish the undisciplined, comfort the discouraged, help the weak, be patient toward all.14And we urge you, brothers and sisters, warn those who are idle and disruptive, encourage the disheartened, help the weak, be patient with everyone.
See that no one pays back evil for evil to anyone, but always pursue what is good for one another and for all.15Make sure that nobody pays back wrong for wrong, but always strive to do what is good for each other and for everyone else.
Always rejoice,16Rejoice always,
constantly pray,17pray continually,
in everything give thanks. For this is God's will for you in Christ Jesus.18give thanks in all circumstances; for this is God's will for you in Christ Jesus.
Do not extinguish the Spirit.19Do not quench the Spirit.
Do not treat prophecies with contempt.20Do not treat prophecies with contempt
But examine all things; hold fast to what is good.21but test them all; hold on to what is good,
Stay away from every form of evil. 22reject every kind of evil.
Now may the God of peace himself make you completely holy and may your spirit and soul and body be kept entirely blameless at the coming of our Lord Jesus Christ.23May God himself, the God of peace, sanctify you through and through. May your whole spirit, soul and body be kept blameless at the coming of our Lord Jesus Christ.
He who calls you is trustworthy, and he will in fact do this.24The one who calls you is faithful, and he will do it.
Brothers and sisters, pray for us too.25Brothers and sisters, pray for us.
Greet all the brothers and sisters with a holy kiss.26Greet all God's people with a holy kiss.
I call on you solemnly in the Lord to have this letter read to all the brothers and sisters.27I charge you before the Lord to have this letter read to all the brothers and sisters.
The grace of our Lord Jesus Christ be with you. 28The grace of our Lord Jesus Christ be with you.
