But understand this, that in the last days difficult times will come.1But mark this: There will be terrible times in the last days.
For people will be lovers of themselves, lovers of money, boastful, arrogant, blasphemers, disobedient to parents, ungrateful, unholy,2People will be lovers of themselves, lovers of money, boastful, proud, abusive, disobedient to their parents, ungrateful, unholy,
unloving, irreconcilable, slanderers, without self-control, savage, opposed to what is good,3without love, unforgiving, slanderous, without self-control, brutal, not lovers of the good,
treacherous, reckless, conceited, loving pleasure rather than loving God.4treacherous, rash, conceited, lovers of pleasure rather than lovers of God--
They will maintain the outward appearance of religion but will have repudiated its power. So avoid people like these.5having a form of godliness but denying its power. Have nothing to do with such people.
For some of these insinuate themselves into households and captivate weak women who are overwhelmed with sins and led along by various passions.6They are the kind who worm their way into homes and gain control over gullible women, who are loaded down with sins and are swayed by all kinds of evil desires,
Such women are always seeking instruction, yet never able to arrive at a knowledge of the truth.7always learning but never able to come to a knowledge of the truth.
And just as Jannes and Jambres opposed Moses, so these people--who have warped minds and are disqualified in the faith--also oppose the truth.8Just as Jannes and Jambres opposed Moses, so also these teachers oppose the truth. They are men of depraved minds, who, as far as the faith is concerned, are rejected.
But they will not go much further, for their foolishness will be obvious to everyone, just like it was with Jannes and Jambres. 9But they will not get very far because, as in the case of those men, their folly will be clear to everyone.
You, however, have followed my teaching, my way of life, my purpose, my faith, my patience, my love, my endurance,10You, however, know all about my teaching, my way of life, my purpose, faith, patience, love, endurance,
as well as the persecutions and sufferings that happened to me in Antioch, in Iconium, and in Lystra. I endured these persecutions and the Lord delivered me from them all.11persecutions, sufferings--what kinds of things happened to me in Antioch, Iconium and Lystra, the persecutions I endured. Yet the Lord rescued me from all of them.
Now in fact all who want to live godly lives in Christ Jesus will be persecuted.12In fact, everyone who wants to live a godly life in Christ Jesus will be persecuted,
But evil people and charlatans will go from bad to worse, deceiving others and being deceived themselves.13while evildoers and impostors will go from bad to worse, deceiving and being deceived.
You, however, must continue in the things you have learned and are confident about. You know who taught you14But as for you, continue in what you have learned and have become convinced of, because you know those from whom you learned it,
and how from infancy you have known the holy writings, which are able to give you wisdom for salvation through faith in Christ Jesus.15and how from infancy you have known the Holy Scriptures, which are able to make you wise for salvation through faith in Christ Jesus.
Every scripture is inspired by God and useful for teaching, for reproof, for correction, and for training in righteousness,16All Scripture is God-breathed and is useful for teaching, rebuking, correcting and training in righteousness,
that the person dedicated to God may be capable and equipped for every good work. 17so that the servant of God may be thoroughly equipped for every good work.
