Now Sarai, Abram's wife, had not given birth to any children, but she had an Egyptian servant named Hagar.1Now Sarai, Abram's wife, had borne him no children. But she had an Egyptian slave named Hagar;
So Sarai said to Abram, "Since the LORD has prevented me from having children, have sexual relations with my servant. Perhaps I can have a family by her." Abram did what Sarai told him. 2so she said to Abram, "The LORD has kept me from having children. Go, sleep with my slave; perhaps I can build a family through her." Abram agreed to what Sarai said.
So after Abram had lived in Canaan for ten years, Sarai, Abram's wife, gave Hagar, her Egyptian servant, to her husband to be his wife.3So after Abram had been living in Canaan ten years, Sarai his wife took her Egyptian slave Hagar and gave her to her husband to be his wife.
He had sexual relations with Hagar, and she became pregnant. Once Hagar realized she was pregnant, she despised Sarai.4He slept with Hagar, and she conceived. When she knew she was pregnant, she began to despise her mistress.
Then Sarai said to Abram, "You have brought this wrong on me! I allowed my servant to have sexual relations with you, but when she realized that she was pregnant, she despised me. May the LORD judge between you and me!" 5Then Sarai said to Abram, "You are responsible for the wrong I am suffering. I put my slave in your arms, and now that she knows she is pregnant, she despises me. May the LORD judge between you and me."
Abram said to Sarai, "Since your servant is under your authority, do to her whatever you think best." Then Sarai treated Hagar harshly, so she ran away from Sarai. 6"Your slave is in your hands," Abram said. "Do with her whatever you think best." Then Sarai mistreated Hagar; so she fled from her.
The LORD's angel found Hagar near a spring of water in the desert--the spring that is along the road to Shur.7The angel of the LORD found Hagar near a spring in the desert; it was the spring that is beside the road to Shur.
He said, "Hagar, servant of Sarai, where have you come from, and where are you going?" She replied, "I'm running away from my mistress, Sarai." 8And he said, "Hagar, slave of Sarai, where have you come from, and where are you going?" "I'm running away from my mistress Sarai," she answered.
Then the LORD's angel said to her, "Return to your mistress and submit to her authority.9Then the angel of the LORD told her, "Go back to your mistress and submit to her."
I will greatly multiply your descendants," the LORD's angel added, "so that they will be too numerous to count."10The angel added, "I will increase your descendants so much that they will be too numerous to count."
Then the LORD's angel said to her, "You are now pregnant and are about to give birth to a son. You are to name him Ishmael, for the LORD has heard your painful groans. 11The angel of the LORD also said to her: "You are now pregnant and you will give birth to a son. You shall name him Ishmael, for the LORD has heard of your misery.
He will be a wild donkey of a man. He will be hostile to everyone, and everyone will be hostile to him. He will live away from his brothers." 12He will be a wild donkey of a man; his hand will be against everyone and everyone's hand against him, and he will live in hostility toward all his brothers."
So Hagar named the LORD who spoke to her, "You are the God who sees me," for she said, "Here I have seen one who sees me!"13She gave this name to the LORD who spoke to her: "You are the God who sees me," for she said, "I have now seen the One who sees me."
That is why the well was called Beer Lahai Roi. (It is located between Kadesh and Bered.) 14That is why the well was called Beer Lahai Roi; it is still there, between Kadesh and Bered.
So Hagar gave birth to Abram's son, whom Abram named Ishmael.15So Hagar bore Abram a son, and Abram gave the name Ishmael to the son she had borne.
(Now Abram was 86 years old when Hagar gave birth to Ishmael.) 16Abram was eighty-six years old when Hagar bore him Ishmael.
