Isaiah 41
NET Parallel NIV [BSB CSB ESV HCS KJV ISV NAS NET NIV NLT HEB]
NET BibleNew International Version
"Listen to me in silence, you coastlands! Let the nations find renewed strength! Let them approach and then speak; let us come together for debate! 1"Be silent before me, you islands! Let the nations renew their strength! Let them come forward and speak; let us meet together at the place of judgment.
Who stirs up this one from the east? Who officially commissions him for service? He hands nations over to him, and enables him to subdue kings. He makes them like dust with his sword, like windblown straw with his bow. 2"Who has stirred up one from the east, calling him in righteousness to his service? He hands nations over to him and subdues kings before him. He turns them to dust with his sword, to windblown chaff with his bow.
He pursues them and passes by unharmed; he advances with great speed. 3He pursues them and moves on unscathed, by a path his feet have not traveled before.
Who acts and carries out decrees? Who summons the successive generations from the beginning? I, the LORD, am present at the very beginning, and at the very end--I am the one. 4Who has done this and carried it through, calling forth the generations from the beginning? I, the LORD--with the first of them and with the last--I am he."
The coastlands see and are afraid; the whole earth trembles; they approach and come. 5The islands have seen it and fear; the ends of the earth tremble. They approach and come forward;
They help one another; one says to the other, 'Be strong!' 6they help each other and say to their companions, "Be strong!"
The craftsman encourages the metalsmith, the one who wields the hammer encourages the one who pounds on the anvil. He approves the quality of the welding, and nails it down so it won't fall over." 7The metalworker encourages the goldsmith, and the one who smooths with the hammer spurs on the one who strikes the anvil. One says of the welding, "It is good." The other nails down the idol so it will not topple.
"You, my servant Israel, Jacob whom I have chosen, offspring of Abraham my friend, 8"But you, Israel, my servant, Jacob, whom I have chosen, you descendants of Abraham my friend,
you whom I am bringing back from the earth's extremities, and have summoned from the remote regions--I told you, "You are my servant." I have chosen you and not rejected you. 9I took you from the ends of the earth, from its farthest corners I called you. I said, 'You are my servant'; I have chosen you and have not rejected you.
Don't be afraid, for I am with you! Don't be frightened, for I am your God! I strengthen you--yes, I help you--yes, I uphold you with my saving right hand! 10So do not fear, for I am with you; do not be dismayed, for I am your God. I will strengthen you and help you; I will uphold you with my righteous right hand.
Look, all who were angry at you will be ashamed and humiliated; your adversaries will be reduced to nothing and perish. 11"All who rage against you will surely be ashamed and disgraced; those who oppose you will be as nothing and perish.
When you will look for your opponents, you will not find them; your enemies will be reduced to absolutely nothing. 12Though you search for your enemies, you will not find them. Those who wage war against you will be as nothing at all.
For I am the LORD your God, the one who takes hold of your right hand, who says to you, 'Don't be afraid, I am helping you.' 13For I am the LORD your God who takes hold of your right hand and says to you, Do not fear; I will help you.
Don't be afraid, despised insignificant Jacob, men of Israel. I am helping you," says the LORD, your protector, the Holy One of Israel. 14Do not be afraid, you worm Jacob, little Israel, do not fear, for I myself will help you," declares the LORD, your Redeemer, the Holy One of Israel.
"Look, I am making you like a sharp threshing sledge, new and double-edged. You will thresh the mountains and crush them; you will make the hills like straw. 15"See, I will make you into a threshing sledge, new and sharp, with many teeth. You will thresh the mountains and crush them, and reduce the hills to chaff.
You will winnow them and the wind will blow them away; the wind will scatter them. You will rejoice in the LORD; you will boast in the Holy One of Israel. 16You will winnow them, the wind will pick them up, and a gale will blow them away. But you will rejoice in the LORD and glory in the Holy One of Israel.
The oppressed and the poor look for water, but there is none; their tongues are parched from thirst. I, the LORD, will respond to their prayers; I, the God of Israel, will not abandon them. 17"The poor and needy search for water, but there is none; their tongues are parched with thirst. But I the LORD will answer them; I, the God of Israel, will not forsake them.
I will make streams flow down the slopes and produce springs in the middle of the valleys. I will turn the desert into a pool of water and the arid land into springs. 18I will make rivers flow on barren heights, and springs within the valleys. I will turn the desert into pools of water, and the parched ground into springs.
I will make cedars, acacias, myrtles, and olive trees grow in the wilderness; I will make evergreens, firs, and cypresses grow together in the desert. 19I will put in the desert the cedar and the acacia, the myrtle and the olive. I will set junipers in the wasteland, the fir and the cypress together,
I will do this so people will observe and recognize, so they will pay attention and understand that the LORD's power has accomplished this, and that the Holy One of Israel has brought it into being." 20so that people may see and know, may consider and understand, that the hand of the LORD has done this, that the Holy One of Israel has created it.
"Present your argument," says the LORD. "Produce your evidence," says Jacob's king. 21"Present your case," says the LORD. "Set forth your arguments," says Jacob's King.
"Let them produce evidence! Let them tell us what will happen! Tell us about your earlier predictive oracles, so we may examine them and see how they were fulfilled. Or decree for us some future events! 22"Tell us, you idols, what is going to happen. Tell us what the former things were, so that we may consider them and know their final outcome. Or declare to us the things to come,
Predict how future events will turn out, so we might know you are gods. Yes, do something good or bad, so we might be frightened and in awe. 23tell us what the future holds, so we may know that you are gods. Do something, whether good or bad, so that we will be dismayed and filled with fear.
Look, you are nothing, and your accomplishments are nonexistent; the one who chooses to worship you is disgusting. 24But you are less than nothing and your works are utterly worthless; whoever chooses you is detestable.
I have stirred up one out of the north and he advances, one from the eastern horizon who prays in my name. He steps on rulers as if they were clay, like a potter treading the clay. 25"I have stirred up one from the north, and he comes-- one from the rising sun who calls on my name. He treads on rulers as if they were mortar, as if he were a potter treading the clay.
Who decreed this from the beginning, so we could know? Who announced it ahead of time, so we could say, 'He's correct'? Indeed, none of them decreed it! Indeed, none of them announced it! Indeed, no one heard you say anything! 26Who told of this from the beginning, so we could know, or beforehand, so we could say, 'He was right'? No one told of this, no one foretold it, no one heard any words from you.
I first decreed to Zion, 'Look, here's what will happen!' I sent a herald to Jerusalem. 27I was the first to tell Zion, 'Look, here they are!' I gave to Jerusalem a messenger of good news.
I look, but there is no one, among them there is no one who serves as an adviser, that I might ask questions and receive answers. 28I look but there is no one-- no one among the gods to give counsel, no one to give answer when I ask them.
Look, all of them are nothing, their accomplishments are nonexistent; their metal images lack any real substance. 29See, they are all false! Their deeds amount to nothing; their images are but wind and confusion.
