NET BibleNew International Version
The one who loves discipline loves knowledge, but the one who hates reproof is stupid. 1Whoever loves discipline loves knowledge, but whoever hates correction is stupid.
A good person obtains favor from the LORD, but the LORD condemns a person with wicked schemes. 2Good people obtain favor from the LORD, but he condemns those who devise wicked schemes.
No one can be established through wickedness, but a righteous root cannot be moved. 3No one can be established through wickedness, but the righteous cannot be uprooted.
A noble wife is the crown of her husband, but the wife who acts shamefully is like rottenness in his bones. 4A wife of noble character is her husband's crown, but a disgraceful wife is like decay in his bones.
The plans of the righteous are just; the counsels of the wicked are deceitful. 5The plans of the righteous are just, but the advice of the wicked is deceitful.
The words of the wicked lie in wait to shed innocent blood, but the words of the upright will deliver them. 6The words of the wicked lie in wait for blood, but the speech of the upright rescues them.
The wicked are overthrown and perish, but the righteous household will stand. 7The wicked are overthrown and are no more, but the house of the righteous stands firm.
A person is praised in accordance with his wisdom, but the one who has a twisted mind is despised. 8A person is praised according to their prudence, and one with a warped mind is despised.
Better is a person of humble standing who nevertheless has a servant, than one who pretends to be somebody important yet has no food. 9Better to be a nobody and yet have a servant than pretend to be somebody and have no food.
A righteous person cares for the life of his animal, but even the most compassionate acts of the wicked are cruel. 10The righteous care for the needs of their animals, but the kindest acts of the wicked are cruel.
The one who works his field will have plenty of food, but whoever chases daydreams lacks wisdom. 11Those who work their land will have abundant food, but those who chase fantasies have no sense.
The wicked person desires a stronghold, but the righteous root endures. 12The wicked desire the stronghold of evildoers, but the root of the righteous endures.
The evil person is ensnared by the transgression of his speech, but the righteous person escapes out of trouble. 13Evildoers are trapped by their sinful talk, and so the innocent escape trouble.
A person will be satisfied with good from the fruit of his words, and the work of his hands will be rendered to him. 14From the fruit of their lips people are filled with good things, and the work of their hands brings them reward.
The way of a fool is right in his own opinion, but the one who listens to advice is wise. 15The way of fools seems right to them, but the wise listen to advice.
A fool's annoyance is known at once, but the prudent overlooks an insult. 16Fools show their annoyance at once, but the prudent overlook an insult.
The faithful witness tells what is right, but a false witness speaks deceit. 17An honest witness tells the truth, but a false witness tells lies.
Speaking recklessly is like the thrusts of a sword, but the words of the wise bring healing. 18The words of the reckless pierce like swords, but the tongue of the wise brings healing.
The one who tells the truth will endure forever, but the one who lies will last only for a moment. 19Truthful lips endure forever, but a lying tongue lasts only a moment.
Deceit is in the heart of those who plot evil, but those who promote peace have joy. 20Deceit is in the hearts of those who plot evil, but those who promote peace have joy.
The righteous do not encounter any harm, but the wicked are filled with calamity. 21No harm overtakes the righteous, but the wicked have their fill of trouble.
The LORD abhors a person who lies, but those who deal truthfully are his delight. 22The LORD detests lying lips, but he delights in people who are trustworthy.
The shrewd person conceals knowledge, but foolish people publicize folly. 23The prudent keep their knowledge to themselves, but a fool's heart blurts out folly.
The diligent person will rule, but the slothful will become a slave. 24Diligent hands will rule, but laziness ends in forced labor.
Anxiety in a person's heart weighs him down, but an encouraging word brings him joy. 25Anxiety weighs down the heart, but a kind word cheers it up.
The righteous person is cautious in his friendship, but the way of the wicked leads them astray. 26The righteous choose their friends carefully, but the way of the wicked leads them astray.
The lazy person does not roast his prey, but personal possessions are precious to the diligent. 27The lazy do not roast any game, but the diligent feed on the riches of the hunt.
In the path of righteousness there is life, but another path leads to death. 28In the way of righteousness there is life; along that path is immortality.
