For the music director; by David, a psalm, a song. God springs into action! His enemies scatter; his adversaries run from him. 1For the director of music. Of David. A psalm. A song. May God arise, may his enemies be scattered; may his foes flee before him.
As smoke is driven away by the wind, so you drive them away. As wax melts before fire, so the wicked are destroyed before God. 2May you blow them away like smoke-- as wax melts before the fire, may the wicked perish before God.
But the godly are happy; they rejoice before God and are overcome with joy. 3But may the righteous be glad and rejoice before God; may they be happy and joyful.
Sing to God! Sing praises to his name! Exalt the one who rides on the clouds! For the LORD is his name! Rejoice before him! 4Sing to God, sing in praise of his name, extol him who rides on the clouds; rejoice before him--his name is the LORD.
He is a father to the fatherless and an advocate for widows. God rules from his holy palace. 5A father to the fatherless, a defender of widows, is God in his holy dwelling.
God settles those who have been deserted in their own homes; he frees prisoners and grants them prosperity. But sinful rebels live in the desert. 6God sets the lonely in families, he leads out the prisoners with singing; but the rebellious live in a sun-scorched land.
O God, when you lead your people into battle, when you march through the desert, (Selah) 7When you, God, went out before your people, when you marched through the wilderness,
the earth shakes, yes, the heavens pour down rain before God, the God of Sinai, before God, the God of Israel. 8the earth shook, the heavens poured down rain, before God, the One of Sinai, before God, the God of Israel.
O God, you cause abundant showers to fall on your chosen people. When they are tired, you sustain them, 9You gave abundant showers, O God; you refreshed your weary inheritance.
for you live among them. You sustain the oppressed with your good blessings, O God. 10Your people settled in it, and from your bounty, God, you provided for the poor.
The Lord speaks; many, many women spread the good news. 11The Lord announces the word, and the women who proclaim it are a mighty throng:
Kings leading armies run away--they run away! The lovely lady of the house divides up the loot. 12"Kings and armies flee in haste; the women at home divide the plunder.
When you lie down among the sheepfolds, the wings of the dove are covered with silver and with glittering gold. 13Even while you sleep among the sheep pens, the wings of my dove are sheathed with silver, its feathers with shining gold."
When the sovereign judge scatters kings, let it snow on Zalmon! 14When the Almighty scattered the kings in the land, it was like snow fallen on Mount Zalmon.
The mountain of Bashan is a towering mountain; the mountain of Bashan is a mountain with many peaks. 15Mount Bashan, majestic mountain, Mount Bashan, rugged mountain,
Why do you look with envy, O mountains with many peaks, at the mountain where God has decided to live? Indeed the LORD will live there permanently! 16why gaze in envy, you rugged mountain, at the mountain where God chooses to reign, where the LORD himself will dwell forever?
God has countless chariots; they number in the thousands. The Lord comes from Sinai in holy splendor. 17The chariots of God are tens of thousands and thousands of thousands; the Lord has come from Sinai into his sanctuary.
You ascend on high, you have taken many captives. You receive tribute from men, including even sinful rebels. Indeed the LORD God lives there! 18When you ascended on high, you took many captives; you received gifts from people, even from the rebellious-- that you, LORD God, might dwell there.
The Lord deserves praise! Day after day he carries our burden, the God who delivers us. (Selah) 19Praise be to the Lord, to God our Savior, who daily bears our burdens.
Our God is a God who delivers; the LORD, the sovereign Lord, can rescue from death. 20Our God is a God who saves; from the Sovereign LORD comes escape from death.
Indeed God strikes the heads of his enemies, the hairy foreheads of those who persist in rebellion. 21Surely God will crush the heads of his enemies, the hairy crowns of those who go on in their sins.
The Lord says, "I will retrieve them from Bashan, I will bring them back from the depths of the sea, 22The Lord says, "I will bring them from Bashan; I will bring them from the depths of the sea,
so that your feet may stomp in their blood, and your dogs may eat their portion of the enemies' corpses." 23that your feet may wade in the blood of your foes, while the tongues of your dogs have their share."
They see your processions, O God--the processions of my God, my king, who marches along in holy splendor. 24Your procession, God, has come into view, the procession of my God and King into the sanctuary.
Singers walk in front; musicians follow playing their stringed instruments, in the midst of young women playing tambourines. 25In front are the singers, after them the musicians; with them are the young women playing the timbrels.
In your large assemblies praise God, the LORD, in the assemblies of Israel! 26Praise God in the great congregation; praise the LORD in the assembly of Israel.
There is little Benjamin, their ruler, and the princes of Judah in their robes, along with the princes of Zebulun and the princes of Naphtali. 27There is the little tribe of Benjamin, leading them, there the great throng of Judah's princes, and there the princes of Zebulun and of Naphtali.
God has decreed that you will be powerful. O God, you who have acted on our behalf, demonstrate your power, 28Summon your power, God; show us your strength, our God, as you have done before.
as you come out of your temple in Jerusalem! Kings bring tribute to you. 29Because of your temple at Jerusalem kings will bring you gifts.
Sound your battle cry against the wild beast of the reeds, and the nations that assemble like a herd of calves led by bulls! They humble themselves and offer gold and silver as tribute. God scatters the nations that like to do battle. 30Rebuke the beast among the reeds, the herd of bulls among the calves of the nations. Humbled, may the beast bring bars of silver. Scatter the nations who delight in war.
They come with red cloth from Egypt, Ethiopia voluntarily offers tribute to God. 31Envoys will come from Egypt; Cush will submit herself to God.
O kingdoms of the earth, sing to God! Sing praises to the Lord, (Selah) 32Sing to God, you kingdoms of the earth, sing praise to the Lord,
to the one who rides through the sky from ancient times! Look! He thunders loudly. 33to him who rides across the highest heavens, the ancient heavens, who thunders with mighty voice.
Acknowledge God's power, his sovereignty over Israel, and the power he reveals in the skies! 34Proclaim the power of God, whose majesty is over Israel, whose power is in the heavens.
You are awe-inspiring, O God, as you emerge from your holy temple! It is the God of Israel who gives the people power and strength. God deserves praise! 35You, God, are awesome in your sanctuary; the God of Israel gives power and strength to his people. Praise be to God!
