At this also my heart pounds and leaps from its place. 1“My heart pounds as I think of this. It trembles within me.
Listen carefully to the thunder of his voice, to the rumbling that proceeds from his mouth. 2Listen carefully to the thunder of God’s voice as it rolls from his mouth.
Under the whole heaven he lets it go, even his lightning to the far corners of the earth. 3It rolls across the heavens, and his lightning flashes in every direction.
After that a voice roars; he thunders with an exalted voice, and he does not hold back his lightning bolts when his voice is heard. 4Then comes the roaring of the thunder— the tremendous voice of his majesty. He does not restrain it when he speaks.
God thunders with his voice in marvelous ways; he does great things beyond our understanding. 5God’s voice is glorious in the thunder. We can’t even imagine the greatness of his power.
For to the snow he says, 'Fall to earth,' and to the torrential rains, 'Pour down.' 6“He directs the snow to fall on the earth and tells the rain to pour down.
He causes everyone to stop working, so that all people may know his work. 7Then everyone stops working so they can watch his power.
The wild animals go to their lairs, and in their dens they remain. 8The wild animals take cover and stay inside their dens.
A tempest blows out from its chamber, icy cold from the driving winds. 9The stormy wind comes from its chamber, and the driving winds bring the cold.
The breath of God produces ice, and the breadth of the waters freeze solid. 10God’s breath sends the ice, freezing wide expanses of water.
He loads the clouds with moisture; he scatters his lightning through the clouds. 11He loads the clouds with moisture, and they flash with his lightning.
The clouds go round in circles, wheeling about according to his plans, to carry out all that he commands them over the face of the whole inhabited world. 12The clouds churn about at his direction. They do whatever he commands throughout the earth.
Whether it is for punishment for his land, or whether it is for mercy, he causes it to find its mark. 13He makes these things happen either to punish people or to show his unfailing love.
"Pay attention to this, Job! Stand still and consider the wonders God works. 14“Pay attention to this, Job. Stop and consider the wonderful miracles of God!
Do you know how God commands them, how he makes lightning flash in his storm cloud? 15Do you know how God controls the storm and causes the lightning to flash from his clouds?
Do you know about the balancing of the clouds, that wondrous activity of him who is perfect in knowledge? 16Do you understand how he moves the clouds with wonderful perfection and skill?
You, whose garments are hot when the earth is still because of the south wind, 17When you are sweltering in your clothes and the south wind dies down and everything is still,
will you, with him, spread out the clouds, solid as a mirror of molten metal? 18he makes the skies reflect the heat like a bronze mirror. Can you do that?
Tell us what we should say to him. We cannot prepare a case because of the darkness. 19“So teach the rest of us what to say to God. We are too ignorant to make our own arguments.
Should he be informed that I want to speak? If a man speaks, surely he would be swallowed up! 20Should God be notified that I want to speak? Can people even speak when they are confused?
But now, the sun cannot be looked at--it is bright in the skies--after a wind passed and swept the clouds away. 21We cannot look at the sun, for it shines brightly in the sky when the wind clears away the clouds.
From the north he comes in golden splendor; around God is awesome majesty. 22So also, golden splendor comes from the mountain of God. He is clothed in dazzling splendor.
As for the Almighty, we cannot attain to him! He is great in power, but justice and abundant righteousness he does not oppress. 23We cannot imagine the power of the Almighty; but even though he is just and righteous, he does not destroy us.
Therefore people fear him, for he does not regard all the wise in heart." 24No wonder people everywhere fear him. All who are wise show him reverence. ”
