New International VersionHolman Christian Standard Bible
whenever I would heal Israel, the sins of Ephraim are exposed and the crimes of Samaria revealed. They practice deceit, thieves break into houses, bandits rob in the streets;1when I heal Israel, the sins of Ephraim and the crimes of Samaria will be exposed. For they practice fraud; a thief breaks in; a raiding party pillages outside.
but they do not realize that I remember all their evil deeds. Their sins engulf them; they are always before me.2But they never consider that I remember all their evil. Now their sins are all around them; they are right in front of My face.
"They delight the king with their wickedness, the princes with their lies.3They please the king with their evil, the princes with their lies.
They are all adulterers, burning like an oven whose fire the baker need not stir from the kneading of the dough till it rises.4All of them commit adultery; they are like an oven heated by a baker who stops stirring the fire from the kneading of the dough until it is leavened.
On the day of the festival of our king the princes become inflamed with wine, and he joins hands with the mockers.5On the day of our king, the princes are sick with the heat of wine-- there is a conspiracy with traitors.
Their hearts are like an oven; they approach him with intrigue. Their passion smolders all night; in the morning it blazes like a flaming fire.6For they--their hearts like an oven-- draw him into their oven. Their anger smolders all night; in the morning it blazes like a flaming fire.
All of them are hot as an oven; they devour their rulers. All their kings fall, and none of them calls on me.7All of them are as hot as an oven, and they consume their rulers. All their kings fall; not one of them calls on Me.
"Ephraim mixes with the nations; Ephraim is a flat loaf not turned over.8Ephraim has allowed himself to get mixed up with the nations. Ephraim is unturned bread baked on a griddle.
Foreigners sap his strength, but he does not realize it. His hair is sprinkled with gray, but he does not notice.9Foreigners consume his strength, but he does not notice. Even his hair is streaked with gray, but he does not notice.
Israel's arrogance testifies against him, but despite all this he does not return to the LORD his God or search for him.10Israel's arrogance testifies against them, yet they do not return to Yahweh their God, and for all this, they do not seek Him.
"Ephraim is like a dove, easily deceived and senseless-- now calling to Egypt, now turning to Assyria.11So Ephraim has become like a silly, senseless dove; they call to Egypt, and they go to Assyria.
When they go, I will throw my net over them; I will pull them down like the birds in the sky. When I hear them flocking together, I will catch them.12As they are going, I will spread My net over them; I will bring them down like birds of the sky. I will discipline them in accordance with the news that reaches their assembly.
Woe to them, because they have strayed from me! Destruction to them, because they have rebelled against me! I long to redeem them but they speak about me falsely.13Woe to them, for they fled from Me; destruction to them, for they rebelled against Me! Though I want to redeem them, they speak lies against Me.
They do not cry out to me from their hearts but wail on their beds. They slash themselves, appealing to their gods for grain and new wine, but they turn away from me.14They do not cry to Me from their hearts; rather, they wail on their beds. They slash themselves for grain and new wine; they turn away from Me.
I trained them and strengthened their arms, but they plot evil against me.15I trained and strengthened their arms, but they plot evil against Me.
They do not turn to the Most High; they are like a faulty bow. Their leaders will fall by the sword because of their insolent words. For this they will be ridiculed in the land of Egypt.16They turn, but not to what is above; they are like a faulty bow. Their leaders will fall by the sword because of the cursing of their tongue. They will be ridiculed for this in the land of Egypt.
