The proverbs of Solomon son of David, king of Israel:1The proverbs of Solomon son of David, king of Israel:
for gaining wisdom and instruction; for understanding words of insight;2For learning what wisdom and discipline are; for understanding insightful sayings;
for receiving instruction in prudent behavior, doing what is right and just and fair;3for receiving wise instruction in righteousness, justice, and integrity;
for giving prudence to those who are simple, knowledge and discretion to the young--4for teaching shrewdness to the inexperienced, knowledge and discretion to a young man--
let the wise listen and add to their learning, and let the discerning get guidance--5a wise man will listen and increase his learning, and a discerning man will obtain guidance--
for understanding proverbs and parables, the sayings and riddles of the wise.6for understanding a proverb or a parable, the words of the wise, and their riddles.
The fear of the LORD is the beginning of knowledge, but fools despise wisdom and instruction.7The fear of the LORD is the beginning of knowledge; fools despise wisdom and discipline.
Listen, my son, to your father's instruction and do not forsake your mother's teaching.8Listen, my son, to your father's instruction, and don't reject your mother's teaching,
They are a garland to grace your head and a chain to adorn your neck.9for they will be a garland of grace on your head and a gold chain around your neck.
My son, if sinful men entice you, do not give in to them.10My son, if sinners entice you, don't be persuaded.
If they say, "Come along with us; let's lie in wait for innocent blood, let's ambush some harmless soul;11If they say--"Come with us! Let's set an ambush and kill someone. Let's attack some innocent person just for fun!
let's swallow them alive, like the grave, and whole, like those who go down to the pit;12Let's swallow them alive, like Sheol, still healthy as they go down to the Pit.
we will get all sorts of valuable things and fill our houses with plunder;13We'll find all kinds of valuable property and fill our houses with plunder.
cast lots with us; we will all share the loot"--14Throw in your lot with us, and we'll all share our money"--
my son, do not go along with them, do not set foot on their paths;15my son, don't travel that road with them or set foot on their path,
for their feet rush into evil, they are swift to shed blood.16because their feet run toward trouble and they hurry to commit murder.
How useless to spread a net where every bird can see it!17It is foolish to spread a net where any bird can see it,
These men lie in wait for their own blood; they ambush only themselves!18but they set an ambush to kill themselves; they attack their own lives.
Such are the paths of all who go after ill-gotten gain; it takes away the life of those who get it.19Such are the paths of all who make profit dishonestly; it takes the lives of those who receive it.
Out in the open wisdom calls aloud, she raises her voice in the public square;20Wisdom calls out in the street; she raises her voice in the public squares.
on top of the wall she cries out, at the city gate she makes her speech:21She cries out above the commotion; she speaks at the entrance of the city gates:"
"How long will you who are simple love your simple ways? How long will mockers delight in mockery and fools hate knowledge?22How long, foolish ones, will you love ignorance? How long will you mockers enjoy mocking and you fools hate knowledge?
Repent at my rebuke! Then I will pour out my thoughts to you, I will make known to you my teachings.23If you respond to my warning, then I will pour out my spirit on you and teach you my words.
But since you refuse to listen when I call and no one pays attention when I stretch out my hand,24Since I called out and you refused, extended my hand and no one paid attention,
since you disregard all my advice and do not accept my rebuke,25since you neglected all my counsel and did not accept my correction,
I in turn will laugh when disaster strikes you; I will mock when calamity overtakes you--26I, in turn, will laugh at your calamity. I will mock when terror strikes you,
when calamity overtakes you like a storm, when disaster sweeps over you like a whirlwind, when distress and trouble overwhelm you.27when terror strikes you like a storm and your calamity comes like a whirlwind, when trouble and stress overcome you.
"Then they will call to me but I will not answer; they will look for me but will not find me,28Then they will call me, but I won't answer; they will search for me, but won't find me.
since they hated knowledge and did not choose to fear the LORD.29Because they hated knowledge, didn't choose to fear the LORD,
Since they would not accept my advice and spurned my rebuke,30were not interested in my counsel, and rejected all my correction,
they will eat the fruit of their ways and be filled with the fruit of their schemes.31they will eat the fruit of their way and be glutted with their own schemes.
For the waywardness of the simple will kill them, and the complacency of fools will destroy them;32For the turning away of the inexperienced will kill them, and the complacency of fools will destroy them.
but whoever listens to me will live in safety and be at ease, without fear of harm."33But whoever listens to me will live securely and be free from the fear of danger."
