Ezekiel 4
NIV Parallel ISV [BSB CSB ESV HCS KJV ISV NAS NET NIV NLT HEB]
New International VersionInternational Standard Version
"Now, son of man, take a block of clay, put it in front of you and draw the city of Jerusalem on it.1"And now Son of Man, you are to take a brick, set it in front of you, and inscribe on it the outline of the city—that is, Jerusalem.
Then lay siege to it: Erect siege works against it, build a ramp up to it, set up camps against it and put battering rams around it.2You are to lay siege against it, build a rampart around it, set a bulwark against it, encircle it with a berm, set up camps against it, and place battering rams around it.
Then take an iron pan, place it as an iron wall between you and the city and turn your face toward it. It will be under siege, and you shall besiege it. This will be a sign to the people of Israel.3Then you are to take a flat, iron plate and set it up as an iron wall between you and the city. "Next, you are to turn toward it, oppose it, and place it under siege, because you are to lay siege to it. All of this will serve as a sign to the house of Israel.
"Then lie on your left side and put the sin of the people of Israel upon yourself. You are to bear their sin for the number of days you lie on your side.4"Now as for you, you are to sleep on your left side, symbolically bearing the punishment of the house of Israel while you're counting the days you'll be sleeping on your left side to bear symbolically the punishment for their sin.
I have assigned you the same number of days as the years of their sin. So for 390 days you will bear the sin of the people of Israel.5I've assigned you to sleep this way for 390 days, representing the years they've been sinning, as you bear symbolically the punishment of the house of Israel.
"After you have finished this, lie down again, this time on your right side, and bear the sin of the people of Judah. I have assigned you 40 days, a day for each year.6When you have completed this, you are to sleep on your right side, symbolically bearing the iniquity of Judah for 40 days. Each day that I've assigned to you represents one year.
Turn your face toward the siege of Jerusalem and with bared arm prophesy against her.7After this, you are to turn toward the rampart of Jerusalem and oppose it with your bare arms, because I'm going to prophesy about it.
I will tie you up with ropes so that you cannot turn from one side to the other until you have finished the days of your siege.8Look! I'll tie you up so that you're unable to turn from one side to the other until you've completed your siege."
"Take wheat and barley, beans and lentils, millet and spelt; put them in a storage jar and use them to make bread for yourself. You are to eat it during the 390 days you lie on your side.9"Furthermore, you are to take some wheat, barley, beans, lentils, millet, and spelt, and mix them together in one container. Then you are to make bread from these grains sufficient to supply you through the time during which you'll be sleeping on your side. You are to eat it for 390 days.
Weigh out twenty shekels of food to eat each day and eat it at set times.10The food that you'll be eating is to consist of portions weighing 20 shekels, to be consumed daily at regular intervals.
Also measure out a sixth of a hin of water and drink it at set times.11You are to measure one sixth of one hin of water each time you drink it.
Eat the food as you would a loaf of barley bread; bake it in the sight of the people, using human excrement for fuel."12You are to eat it as barley cakes and bake it right in front of them, using dried human dung for cooking fuel."
The LORD said, "In this way the people of Israel will eat defiled food among the nations where I will drive them."13Then the LORD said, "This is how the Israelis will be eating unclean food among the nations, where I'll be sending them."
Then I said, "Not so, Sovereign LORD! I have never defiled myself. From my youth until now I have never eaten anything found dead or torn by wild animals. No impure meat has ever entered my mouth."14"Now, Lord GOD," I replied, "I've never been defiled, ever since I was young until now. I haven't eaten an animal that died on its own or was torn by beasts, and no unclean meat has ever entered my mouth!"
"Very well," he said, "I will let you bake your bread over cow dung instead of human excrement."15"Okay," he responded. "I'll allow you to substitute cow's dung for human dung. Cook your food over that."
He then said to me: "Son of man, I am about to cut off the food supply in Jerusalem. The people will eat rationed food in anxiety and drink rationed water in despair,16He also told me, "Son of Man, look! I'm about to disrupt the source of bread in Jerusalem. As a result, they'll ration bread by weight while their terror continues to grow and they'll ration drinking water while their horror continues to mount!
for food and water will be scarce. They will be appalled at the sight of each other and will waste away because of their sin.17Indeed, they'll need bread and water, but everyone will be panic-stricken as they waste away in their iniquity."
