New International VersionNew American Standard Bible 1995
Wives, in the same way submit yourselves to your own husbands so that, if any of them do not believe the word, they may be won over without words by the behavior of their wives,1In the same way, you wives, be submissive to your own husbands so that even if any of them are disobedient to the word, they may be won without a word by the behavior of their wives,
when they see the purity and reverence of your lives.2as they observe your chaste and respectful behavior.
Your beauty should not come from outward adornment, such as elaborate hairstyles and the wearing of gold jewelry or fine clothes.3Your adornment must not be merely external-- braiding the hair, and wearing gold jewelry, or putting on dresses;
Rather, it should be that of your inner self, the unfading beauty of a gentle and quiet spirit, which is of great worth in God's sight.4but let it be the hidden person of the heart, with the imperishable quality of a gentle and quiet spirit, which is precious in the sight of God.
For this is the way the holy women of the past who put their hope in God used to adorn themselves. They submitted themselves to their own husbands,5For in this way in former times the holy women also, who hoped in God, used to adorn themselves, being submissive to their own husbands;
like Sarah, who obeyed Abraham and called him her lord. You are her daughters if you do what is right and do not give way to fear.6just as Sarah obeyed Abraham, calling him lord, and you have become her children if you do what is right without being frightened by any fear.
Husbands, in the same way be considerate as you live with your wives, and treat them with respect as the weaker partner and as heirs with you of the gracious gift of life, so that nothing will hinder your prayers.7You husbands in the same way, live with your wives in an understanding way, as with someone weaker, since she is a woman; and show her honor as a fellow heir of the grace of life, so that your prayers will not be hindered.
Finally, all of you, be like-minded, be sympathetic, love one another, be compassionate and humble.8To sum up, all of you be harmonious, sympathetic, brotherly, kindhearted, and humble in spirit;
Do not repay evil with evil or insult with insult. On the contrary, repay evil with blessing, because to this you were called so that you may inherit a blessing.9not returning evil for evil or insult for insult, but giving a blessing instead; for you were called for the very purpose that you might inherit a blessing.
For, "Whoever would love life and see good days must keep their tongue from evil and their lips from deceitful speech.10For, "THE ONE WHO DESIRES LIFE, TO LOVE AND SEE GOOD DAYS, MUST KEEP HIS TONGUE FROM EVIL AND HIS LIPS FROM SPEAKING DECEIT.
They must turn from evil and do good; they must seek peace and pursue it.11"HE MUST TURN AWAY FROM EVIL AND DO GOOD; HE MUST SEEK PEACE AND PURSUE IT.
For the eyes of the Lord are on the righteous and his ears are attentive to their prayer, but the face of the Lord is against those who do evil."12"FOR THE EYES OF THE LORD ARE TOWARD THE RIGHTEOUS, AND HIS EARS ATTEND TO THEIR PRAYER, BUT THE FACE OF THE LORD IS AGAINST THOSE WHO DO EVIL."
Who is going to harm you if you are eager to do good?13Who is there to harm you if you prove zealous for what is good?
But even if you should suffer for what is right, you are blessed. "Do not fear their threats; do not be frightened."14But even if you should suffer for the sake of righteousness, you are blessed. AND DO NOT FEAR THEIR INTIMIDATION, AND DO NOT BE TROUBLED,
But in your hearts revere Christ as Lord. Always be prepared to give an answer to everyone who asks you to give the reason for the hope that you have. But do this with gentleness and respect,15but sanctify Christ as Lord in your hearts, always being ready to make a defense to everyone who asks you to give an account for the hope that is in you, yet with gentleness and reverence;
keeping a clear conscience, so that those who speak maliciously against your good behavior in Christ may be ashamed of their slander.16and keep a good conscience so that in the thing in which you are slandered, those who revile your good behavior in Christ will be put to shame.
For it is better, if it is God's will, to suffer for doing good than for doing evil.17For it is better, if God should will it so, that you suffer for doing what is right rather than for doing what is wrong.
For Christ also suffered once for sins, the righteous for the unrighteous, to bring you to God. He was put to death in the body but made alive in the Spirit.18For Christ also died for sins once for all, the just for the unjust, so that He might bring us to God, having been put to death in the flesh, but made alive in the spirit;
After being made alive, he went and made proclamation to the imprisoned spirits--19in which also He went and made proclamation to the spirits now in prison,
to those who were disobedient long ago when God waited patiently in the days of Noah while the ark was being built. In it only a few people, eight in all, were saved through water,20who once were disobedient, when the patience of God kept waiting in the days of Noah, during the construction of the ark, in which a few, that is, eight persons, were brought safely through the water.
and this water symbolizes baptism that now saves you also--not the removal of dirt from the body but the pledge of a clear conscience toward God. It saves you by the resurrection of Jesus Christ,21Corresponding to that, baptism now saves you-- not the removal of dirt from the flesh, but an appeal to God for a good conscience-- through the resurrection of Jesus Christ,
who has gone into heaven and is at God's right hand--with angels, authorities and powers in submission to him.22who is at the right hand of God, having gone into heaven, after angels and authorities and powers had been subjected to Him.
