Therefore, since Christ suffered in his body, arm yourselves also with the same attitude, because whoever suffers in the body is done with sin.1So, since Christ suffered in the flesh, you also arm yourselves with the same attitude, because the one who has suffered in the flesh has finished with sin,
As a result, they do not live the rest of their earthly lives for evil human desires, but rather for the will of God.2in that he spends the rest of his time on earth concerned about the will of God and not human desires.
For you have spent enough time in the past doing what pagans choose to do--living in debauchery, lust, drunkenness, orgies, carousing and detestable idolatry.3For the time that has passed was sufficient for you to do what the non-Christians desire. You lived then in debauchery, evil desires, drunkenness, carousing, drinking bouts, and wanton idolatries.
They are surprised that you do not join them in their reckless, wild living, and they heap abuse on you.4So they are astonished when you do not rush with them into the same flood of wickedness, and they vilify you.
But they will have to give account to him who is ready to judge the living and the dead.5They will face a reckoning before Jesus Christ who stands ready to judge the living and the dead.
For this is the reason the gospel was preached even to those who are now dead, so that they might be judged according to human standards in regard to the body, but live according to God in regard to the spirit.6Now it was for this very purpose that the gospel was preached to those who are now dead, so that though they were judged in the flesh by human standards they may live spiritually by God's standards.
The end of all things is near. Therefore be alert and of sober mind so that you may pray.7For the culmination of all things is near. So be self-controlled and sober-minded for the sake of prayer.
Above all, love each other deeply, because love covers over a multitude of sins.8Above all keep your love for one another fervent, because love covers a multitude of sins.
Offer hospitality to one another without grumbling.9Show hospitality to one another without complaining.
Each of you should use whatever gift you have received to serve others, as faithful stewards of God's grace in its various forms.10Just as each one has received a gift, use it to serve one another as good stewards of the varied grace of God.
If anyone speaks, they should do so as one who speaks the very words of God. If anyone serves, they should do so with the strength God provides, so that in all things God may be praised through Jesus Christ. To him be the glory and the power for ever and ever. Amen.11Whoever speaks, let it be with God's words. Whoever serves, do so with the strength that God supplies, so that in everything God will be glorified through Jesus Christ. To him belong the glory and the power forever and ever. Amen.
Dear friends, do not be surprised at the fiery ordeal that has come on you to test you, as though something strange were happening to you.12Dear friends, do not be astonished that a trial by fire is occurring among you, as though something strange were happening to you.
But rejoice inasmuch as you participate in the sufferings of Christ, so that you may be overjoyed when his glory is revealed.13But rejoice in the degree that you have shared in the sufferings of Christ, so that when his glory is revealed you may also rejoice and be glad.
If you are insulted because of the name of Christ, you are blessed, for the Spirit of glory and of God rests on you.14If you are insulted for the name of Christ, you are blessed, because the Spirit of glory, who is the Spirit of God, rests on you.
If you suffer, it should not be as a murderer or thief or any other kind of criminal, or even as a meddler.15But let none of you suffer as a murderer or thief or criminal or as a troublemaker.
However, if you suffer as a Christian, do not be ashamed, but praise God that you bear that name.16But if you suffer as a Christian, do not be ashamed, but glorify God that you bear such a name.
For it is time for judgment to begin with God's household; and if it begins with us, what will the outcome be for those who do not obey the gospel of God?17For it is time for judgment to begin, starting with the house of God. And if it starts with us, what will be the fate of those who are disobedient to the gospel of God?
And, "If it is hard for the righteous to be saved, what will become of the ungodly and the sinner?"18And if the righteous are barely saved, what will become of the ungodly and sinners?
So then, those who suffer according to God's will should commit themselves to their faithful Creator and continue to do good.19So then let those who suffer according to the will of God entrust their souls to a faithful Creator as they do good.
