1The LORD spoke to Moses in the tent of meeting in the Desert of Sinai on the first day of the second month of the second year after the Israelites came out of Egypt. He said:1Now the LORD spoke to Moses in the tent of meeting in the wilderness of Sinai on the first day of the second month of the second year after the Israelites departed from the land of Egypt. He said:
2"Take a census of the whole Israelite community by their clans and families, listing every man by name, one by one.2"Take a census of the entire Israelite community by their clans and families, counting the name of every individual male.
3You and Aaron are to count according to their divisions all the men in Israel who are twenty years old or more and able to serve in the army.3You and Aaron are to number all in Israel who can serve in the army, those who are twenty years old or older, by their divisions.
4One man from each tribe, each of them the head of his family, is to help you.4And to help you there is to be a man from each tribe, each man the head of his family.
5These are the names of the men who are to assist you: from Reuben, Elizur son of Shedeur;5Now these are the names of the men who are to help you: from Reuben, Elizur son of Shedeur;
6from Simeon, Shelumiel son of Zurishaddai;6from Simeon, Shelumiel son of Zurishaddai;
7from Judah, Nahshon son of Amminadab;7from Judah, Nahshon son of Amminadab;

16These were the men appointed from the community, the leaders of their ancestral tribes. They were the heads of the clans of Israel.16These were the ones chosen from the community, leaders of their ancestral tribes. They were the heads of the thousands of Israel.
17Moses and Aaron took these men whose names had been specified,17So Moses and Aaron took these men who had been mentioned specifically by name,
18and they called the whole community together on the first day of the second month. The people registered their ancestry by their clans and families, and the men twenty years old or more were listed by name, one by one,18and they assembled the entire community together on the first day of the second month. Then the people recorded their ancestry by their clans and families, and the men who were twenty years old or older were listed by name individually,
19as the LORD commanded Moses. And so he counted them in the Desert of Sinai:19just as the LORD had commanded Moses. And so he numbered them in the wilderness of Sinai.
20From the descendants of Reuben the firstborn son of Israel: All the men twenty years old or more who were able to serve in the army were listed by name, one by one, according to the records of their clans and families.20And they were as follows: The descendants of Reuben, the firstborn son of Israel: According to the records of their clans and families, all the males twenty years old or older who could serve in the army were listed by name individually.
21The number from the tribe of Reuben was 46,500.21Those of them who were numbered from the tribe of Reuben were 46,500.
22From the descendants of Simeon: All the men twenty years old or more who were able to serve in the army were counted and listed by name, one by one, according to the records of their clans and families.22From the descendants of Simeon: According to the records of their clans and families, all the males numbered of them twenty years old or older who could serve in the army were listed by name individually.
23The number from the tribe of Simeon was 59,300.23Those of them who were numbered from the tribe of Simeon were 59,300.

29The number from the tribe of Issachar was 54,400.29Those of them who were numbered from the tribe of Issachar were 54,400.

33The number from the tribe of Ephraim was 40,500.33Those of them who were numbered from the tribe of Ephraim were 40,500.
34From the descendants of Manasseh: All the men twenty years old or more who were able to serve in the army were listed by name, according to the records of their clans and families.34From the descendants of Manasseh: According to the records of their clans and families, all the males twenty years old or older who could serve in the army were listed by name.
35The number from the tribe of Manasseh was 32,200.35Those of them who were numbered from the tribe of Manasseh were 32,200.

41The number from the tribe of Asher was 41,500.41Those of them who were numbered from the tribe of Asher were 41,500.
42From the descendants of Naphtali: All the men twenty years old or more who were able to serve in the army were listed by name, according to the records of their clans and families.42From the descendants of Naphtali: According to the records of their clans and families, all the males twenty years old or older who could serve in the army were listed by name.
43The number from the tribe of Naphtali was 53,400.43Those of them who were numbered from the tribe of Naphtali were 53,400.
44These were the men counted by Moses and Aaron and the twelve leaders of Israel, each one representing his family.44These were the men whom Moses and Aaron numbered along with the twelve leaders of Israel, each of whom was from his own family.
45All the Israelites twenty years old or more who were able to serve in Israel's army were counted according to their families.45All the Israelites who were twenty years old or older, who could serve in Israel's army, were numbered according to their families.
46The total number was 603,550.46And all those numbered totaled 603,550.
47The ancestral tribe of the Levites, however, was not counted along with the others.47But the Levites, according to the tribe of their fathers, were not numbered among them.
48The LORD had said to Moses:48The LORD had said to Moses,
49"You must not count the tribe of Levi or include them in the census of the other Israelites.49"Only the tribe of Levi you must not number or count with the other Israelites.
50Instead, appoint the Levites to be in charge of the tabernacle of the covenant law--over all its furnishings and everything belonging to it. They are to carry the tabernacle and all its furnishings; they are to take care of it and encamp around it.50But appoint the Levites over the tabernacle of the testimony, over all its furnishings and over everything in it. They must carry the tabernacle and all its furnishings; and they must attend to it and camp around it.
51Whenever the tabernacle is to move, the Levites are to take it down, and whenever the tabernacle is to be set up, the Levites shall do it. Anyone else who approaches it is to be put to death.51Whenever the tabernacle is to move, the Levites must take it down, and whenever the tabernacle is to be reassembled, the Levites must set it up. Any unauthorized person who approaches it must be killed.
52The Israelites are to set up their tents by divisions, each of them in their own camp under their standard.52"The Israelites will camp according to their divisions, each man in his camp, and each man by his standard.
53The Levites, however, are to set up their tents around the tabernacle of the covenant law so that my wrath will not fall on the Israelite community. The Levites are to be responsible for the care of the tabernacle of the covenant law."53But the Levites must camp around the tabernacle of the testimony, so that the LORD's anger will not fall on the Israelite community. The Levites are responsible for the care of the tabernacle of the testimony."
54The Israelites did all this just as the LORD commanded Moses.54The Israelites did according to all that the LORD commanded Moses--that is what they did.
