Psalm 56

New International VersionNET Bible
For the director of music. To the tune of "A Dove on Distant Oaks." Of David. A miktam. When the Philistines had seized him in Gath. Be merciful to me, my God, for my enemies are in hot pursuit; all day long they press their attack.1For the music director; according to the yonath-elem-rechovim style; a prayer of David, written when the Philistines captured him in Gath. Have mercy on me, O God, for men are attacking me! All day long hostile enemies are tormenting me.
My adversaries pursue me all day long; in their pride many are attacking me.2Those who anticipate my defeat attack me all day long. Indeed, many are fighting against me, O Exalted One.
When I am afraid, I put my trust in you.3When I am afraid, I trust in you.
In God, whose word I praise-- in God I trust and am not afraid. What can mere mortals do to me?4In God--I boast in his promise--in God I trust, I am not afraid. What can mere men do to me?
All day long they twist my words; all their schemes are for my ruin.5All day long they cause me trouble; they make a habit of plotting my demise.
They conspire, they lurk, they watch my steps, hoping to take my life.6They stalk and lurk; they watch my every step, as they prepare to take my life.
Because of their wickedness do not let them escape; in your anger, God, bring the nations down.7Because they are bent on violence, do not let them escape! In your anger bring down the nations, O God!
Record my misery; list my tears on your scroll -- are they not in your record?8You keep track of my misery. Put my tears in your leather container! Are they not recorded in your scroll?
Then my enemies will turn back when I call for help. By this I will know that God is for me.9My enemies will turn back when I cry out to you for help; I know that God is on my side.
In God, whose word I praise, in the LORD, whose word I praise--10In God--I boast in his promise--in the LORD--I boast in his promise--
in God I trust and am not afraid. What can man do to me?11in God I trust, I am not afraid. What can mere men do to me?
I am under vows to you, my God; I will present my thank offerings to you.12I am obligated to fulfill the vows I made to you, O God; I will give you the thank-offerings you deserve,
For you have delivered me from death and my feet from stumbling, that I may walk before God in the light of life.13when you deliver my life from death. You keep my feet from stumbling, so that I might serve God as I enjoy life.
