Proverbs 13
NIV Parallel NLT [BSB CSB ESV HCS KJV ISV NAS NET NIV NLT HEB]
New International VersionNew Living Translation
A wise son heeds his father's instruction, but a mocker does not respond to rebukes.1A wise child accepts a parent’s discipline; a mocker refuses to listen to correction.
From the fruit of their lips people enjoy good things, but the unfaithful have an appetite for violence.2Wise words will win you a good meal, but treacherous people have an appetite for violence.
Those who guard their lips preserve their lives, but those who speak rashly will come to ruin.3Those who control their tongue will have a long life; opening your mouth can ruin everything.
A sluggard's appetite is never filled, but the desires of the diligent are fully satisfied.4Lazy people want much but get little, but those who work hard will prosper.
The righteous hate what is false, but the wicked make themselves a stench and bring shame on themselves.5The godly hate lies; the wicked cause shame and disgrace.
Righteousness guards the person of integrity, but wickedness overthrows the sinner.6Godliness guards the path of the blameless, but the evil are misled by sin.
One person pretends to be rich, yet has nothing; another pretends to be poor, yet has great wealth.7Some who are poor pretend to be rich; others who are rich pretend to be poor.
A person's riches may ransom their life, but the poor cannot respond to threatening rebukes.8The rich can pay a ransom for their lives, but the poor won’t even get threatened.
The light of the righteous shines brightly, but the lamp of the wicked is snuffed out.9The life of the godly is full of light and joy, but the light of the wicked will be snuffed out.
Where there is strife, there is pride, but wisdom is found in those who take advice.10Pride leads to conflict; those who take advice are wise.
Dishonest money dwindles away, but whoever gathers money little by little makes it grow.11Wealth from get-rich-quick schemes quickly disappears; wealth from hard work grows over time.
Hope deferred makes the heart sick, but a longing fulfilled is a tree of life.12Hope deferred makes the heart sick, but a dream fulfilled is a tree of life.
Whoever scorns instruction will pay for it, but whoever respects a command is rewarded.13People who despise advice are asking for trouble; those who respect a command will succeed.
The teaching of the wise is a fountain of life, turning a person from the snares of death.14The instruction of the wise is like a life-giving fountain; those who accept it avoid the snares of death.
Good judgment wins favor, but the way of the unfaithful leads to their destruction.15A person with good sense is respected; a treacherous person is headed for destruction.
All who are prudent act with knowledge, but fools expose their folly.16Wise people think before they act; fools don’t—and even brag about their foolishness.
A wicked messenger falls into trouble, but a trustworthy envoy brings healing.17An unreliable messenger stumbles into trouble, but a reliable messenger brings healing.
Whoever disregards discipline comes to poverty and shame, but whoever heeds correction is honored.18If you ignore criticism, you will end in poverty and disgrace; if you accept correction, you will be honored.
A longing fulfilled is sweet to the soul, but fools detest turning from evil.19It is pleasant to see dreams come true, but fools refuse to turn from evil to attain them.
Walk with the wise and become wise, for a companion of fools suffers harm.20Walk with the wise and become wise; associate with fools and get in trouble.
Trouble pursues the sinner, but the righteous are rewarded with good things.21Trouble chases sinners, while blessings reward the righteous.
A good person leaves an inheritance for their children's children, but a sinner's wealth is stored up for the righteous.22Good people leave an inheritance to their grandchildren, but the sinner’s wealth passes to the godly.
An unplowed field produces food for the poor, but injustice sweeps it away.23A poor person’s farm may produce much food, but injustice sweeps it all away.
Whoever spares the rod hates their children, but the one who loves their children is careful to discipline them.24Those who spare the rod of discipline hate their children. Those who love their children care enough to discipline them.
The righteous eat to their hearts' content, but the stomach of the wicked goes hungry.25The godly eat to their hearts’ content, but the belly of the wicked goes hungry.
